Chuck Lorre Says Upcoming ‘The Big Bang Theory’ Spinoff Is a Big Risk: It’ll be ‘Revered or Reviled’
It feels like everything Chuck Lorre touches turns to gold. The famed show creator has crafted some of the most beloved sitcoms in recent TV history and had a heavy hand in several other very successful series in the past, too. While Two and a Half Men is considered the big hit that allowed him more creative freedom, one could argue that The Big Bang Theory is his most successful project. All of the show’s spin-offs thus far have been successful, too. You’d think that would leave Lorre feeling pretty confident. Still, he’s not 100% sure fans will love what he has coming up. He recently suggested his upcoming The Big Bang Theory spinoff is a massive gamble that could really go either way.
Chuck Lorre isn’t so sure how fans are going to feel about his next ‘The Big Bang Theory’ spinoff
Chuck Lorre is used to his shows being hits. That doesn’t mean he’s confident that everything he creates will gain mainstream popularity. Lorre recently opened up about his upcoming The Big Bang Theory spinoff that focuses on Stuart Bloom. While Lorre is excited about the project, he’s not so sure fans will love it. He revealed that this spinoff has a science-fiction lean that may or may not appeal to fans.
Lorre spoke with People about the project. While the series, being created for HBO Max, has been teased for months, his chat with the outlet is the first time he’s shared its actual premise. Lorre revealed that the spinoff, titled Stuart Fails to Save the Universe, will find Stuart Bloom trying to “restore reality” after a massive device blunder. While the title suggests the melancholy comic book store owner fails at his task, Lorre isn’t giving too much away about the show. He told the outlet he’s not sure whether fans will revere the series or revile it.
He’s had nothing but success so far
While Chuck Lorre remains unsure whether fans will love or despise the upcoming spinoff, there has been nothing but success from the The Big Bang Theory universe thus far. Lorre followed up the success of The Big Bang Theory with Young Sheldon. The series built out Sheldon Cooper’s origin story. While the show remained a ratings juggernaut throughout its run, there was always a built-in expiration date on the series.
The second spin-off, which expands the Copper family’s story, is currently airing. Georgie and Mandy’s First Marriage follows the complicated romance between Georgie Cooper, Sheldon’s older brother, and Mandy McCalister. While The Big Bang Theory established that the pair eventually divorced, the details were never revealed. The lack of detail has given Chuck Lorre and his team the freedom to take the story just about anywhere. It has a strong following, with CBS already renewing the sitcom for a third season.
Given the success of the last two The Big Bang Theory spinoffs, a third is likely to do fine, too. Only time will tell, however, if fans allow a science fiction sitcom to join the successful universe.
