He’s maintaining a measured perspective, noting that the trauma he’s experienced is absolutely nothing in comparison to what the Reiner family has been battling.

Conan O’Brien has officially broken his silence about the deaths of his friends. The former late-night host sat down for a chat with The Hollywood Reporter ahead of the Academy Awards, and opted to really delve into his feelings about the murders and becoming a “cultural bystander.”  O’Brien previously discussed his friends’ deaths very briefly during a podcast appearance last month. He was careful not to say much.

This time, O’Brien has noted that he undestands why he was dragged into the narrative, and the sadness that came along with it. Still, he downplayed the impact it has had on him and his wife when compared to what the Reiners’ family, including their children, is battling. He told the outlet, “Whatever difficulties my wife and I have experienced having our name attached to it are nothing compared to the scale of the tragedy for the family and the loss of Rob and Michele.” O’Brien went on to contend that his name being dragged into the situation was pretty much a guarantee. He said, “If you’re a known person, your name is going to get dragged into things sometimes, but it is not a hardship. There is only sadness that they’re gone.”

How did the former late-night host become attached to the murder case?

Conan O’Brien’s name became attached to the murders of Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner, after news reports revealed the duo had spent time at O’Brien’s holiday party the night before their deaths. Coverage continued as chilling details about a fight between Rob and his troubled son, Nick Reiner, at the party surfaced.

Insiders claimed Nick Reiner had not initially been invited to the event. The couple asked O’Brien if the troubled screenwriter could tag along, as they were concerned about his well-being. Reportedly, Nick acted inappropriately during the event, prompting a loud disagreement. The family reportedly left the event early, with Rob Reiner bidding his friends farewell as if nothing bad was coming.

It is unclear exactly what happened once the family returned home, or when the attack actually took place. The couple was found the following afternoon by their daughter, Romy Reiner, after they missed a planned appointment. Both were dead inside their Brentwood home when Romy arrived. Nick was apprehended by police later that evening after they tracked him to a hotel. Nick, the couple’s middle child, has been charged with their murders.  He is being held at the Twin Towers Detention Center in Los Angeles after pleading not guilty to murder charges.
