D’Angelo was born Michael Eugene Archer on Feb. 11, 1974, in Richmond, Virginia. His father was a preacher and therefore he grew listening to gospel music. He gained an appreciation for music at an early age and began playing the piano. By the time he was a teenager, he was performing during amatuer nights with his band, Michael Archer and Precise. They eventually earned recognition when they were performed at the Apollo Theater in Harlem.
When he was 18, D’Angelo dropped out of school and moved to New York to pursue music full-time. He released his debut album Brown Sugar in 1995. He released his second album Voodoo in 2000. That album debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and included the hit track “Untitled (How Does It Feel).” D’Angelo also collaborated with several others in the buisness including Lauryn Hill for her song “Nothing Even Matters.”
