Daryl Hannah is the Latest ‘Love Story’ Opponent
Ryan Murphy is no stranger to controversy. Many of his recent television projects have been controversial, but he likely didn’t expect Love Story, a tale about the late John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette, to be met with more ire than Monster or American Horror Story. Still, here we are. Since the day the biographical limited series began filming, there have been concerns. Now that it is airing, there is more anger than ever. Daryl Hannah is the most recent opponent of Love Story, insisting Ryan Murphy absolutely demolished the real story of her own love story with America’s prince. She is speaking out.
Daryl Hannah accuses ‘Love Story’ of classic misogyny
Daryl Hannah did not come off looking good in Love Story. It seems the actor, who is very much alive and well, was not consulted at all about her romance with John F. Kennedy Jr. Ryan Murphy appears to have used other source material for her portrayal, including tabloid fodder from the 1980s, and Hannah is pretty pissed about it.
The acclaimed Splash actor penned an op-ed for the New York Times in which she blasted the series, and its creators, calling it inaccurate and harmful. Hannah argued that the series portrayed her as irritating and inappropriate. She went on to claim that scenes depicting drug use and inappropriate behavior towards JFK Jr.’s family were completely fictional.
Hannah also called the series misogynistic and insisted she’s been harmed by the fictional portrayal of her love affair with the famed son of an American president. While her fans have rallied around her, Hannah revealed that she is speaking out because she’s received hostile messages from viewers. Apparently, many viewers don’t believe that Murphy and his team took creative license with her romance with JFK Jr.
How long were Daryl Hannah and John F. Kennedy Jr. together?
Daryl Hannah’s romance with John F. Kennedy Jr. was always going to be a part of any story told about his romantic life. While she isn’t the woman he married, their love affair was long, complicated, and of much public interest. The former flames met while on vacation in the 1980s. Still, they didn’t connect romantically until 1989, when they remet at a wedding.
They dated on and off for several years, but the relationship always seemed somewhat rocky. At the very least, that’s what the media had to say about it at the time. During the romance, tabloids suggested Jackie Kennedy Onnasis hated Hannah. Insiders have insisted she didn’t dislike the actor. Rather, they claim, she didn’t like the idea of her son with someone who would bring intense media scrutiny. That very scrutiny is largely blamed for the split.
Hannah and JFK Jr. separated for good in the mid-1990s. He dated other women during off-periods, too, including Sarah Jessica Parker. Eventually, he settled down with Caroyln Bessette, whom he married in 1996.
Hannah has remained largely quiet about the relationship since JFK Jr.’s death in a plane crash in 1999. She reportedly grieved privately out of respect for the Kennedys and the Bessettes. Kennedy Jr.’s wife, Carolyn Bessette, and her sister, Lauren, both died in the plane crash, as well.
