In his new standup special, Dave Chappelle: The Unstoppable, the comedian addressed the backlash he received after saying he hoped Combs might get off. He said that he didn’t support Combs. He finds it hard to dislike him after he helped him during an incident at the Hollywood Bowl.
During a 2022 show, someone rushed the stage and attacked Chappelle. He claimed Combs intervened.
“I was on stage not long ago in the States and people got mad because I said maybe Puff will get off,” he said, per Complex. “It’s not that I think Puff is right, but when I got attacked in L.A. at the Hollywood Bowl, people forget Puff was the guy that tackled my attacker. He saved my life.”
In the immediate aftermath of the incident, Chappelle thanked Jamie Foxx and Busta Rhymes for stopping the attacker.
“I had security that night, but they just wasn’t ready,” he added in his new special. “They ran out, all them slipped and fell. Puffy got my attacker and tackled him.”
He admitted this complicated his feelings about Combs despite the allegations against him.
“That’s a hard dude to be mad at after that,” he said.
