Denzel Washington’s Underrated $130 Million Action Movie Is Trending On Netflix At The Perfect Time
Denzel Washington has amassed over 100 film and TV credits, spanning acting, directing, and producing. Some of modern history’s greatest flicks have featured the famous actor. Still, Denzel Washington has appeared in a few movies that were considered at best middling and panned by critics. That doesn’t mean fans don’t love them. One of those movies, Man on Fire, is trending on Netflix more than 20 years after its release, and the timing could not be better for the streaming service provider.
The 2004 action movie, ‘Man on Fire,’ trends on Netflix
Streaming service providers have changed how we watch TV and how we find content to watch. Every so often, subscribers decide to bring a movie back from the dead. That is what happened recently with Man on Fire starring Denzel Washington. The movie, which hit the box office in 2004, surprisingly trended, with a bunch of viewers deciding now was the perfect time for a long-forgotten action flick.
While the movie is trending on Netflix now, it wasn’t as successful when it was released in theatres in 2004. At the very least, critics didn’t think much of it. The flick grossed $130 million at the box office on a $70 million budget, making it a financial success. Audiences enjoyed the movie, but critics panned it. They mostly agreed that Denzel Washington’s performance was good, but argued that the movie’s direction, with its shaky camerawork, made it difficult to watch and nauseating. Once it left the theaters, no one really talked about it until now. Frankly, the timing could not be better.
Fan interest in the movie comes at the perfect time
Fans’ sudden interest in Man on Fire is certainly music to the ears of Netflix’s executives. While users have been streaming the movie en masse in recent weeks, Netflix has been hard at work reimagining it and building it into something a bit more substantial. A series by the same name is set to premiere on the platform sometime in 2026.
According to Tudum, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II will take on the role of John Creasy in a series adaptation of he book the Washington flick was based on. According to several sources, the show’s first season will have 8 episodes and build on the story from the original movie. A.J. Quinnell provided more than enough source material for several seasons. While Man on Fire is just the first of several books that feature John Creasy. Netflix will be using those books to build a rich storyline.
The streaming service provider released a first look at the show recently. An official release date has not yet been announced.
