Diane Keaton’s Health ‘Declined Very Suddenly’ Before Her Death: ‘I Was Kind of Stunned’
In the months before her death, Diane Keaton’s health reportedly declined very suddenly. Sources say the 79-year-old actor did not open up to many people in her life about her health, but there were reportedly signs that something was wrong. One friend noted that Keaton had lost a great deal of weight before her death. Others believe she put her dream home on the market due to health concerns.
Diane Keaton reportedly didn’t speak to many people about her health
Though Keaton’s cause of death is not currently known, her longtime friend Carole Bayer Sager said she noticed that something was wrong in their final meeting.
“I saw her two or three weeks ago, and she was very thin,” Sager told People. “She had lost so much weight.”
Sager said she hadn’t seen Keaton in a while. The actor was temporarily living in Palm Springs after the California wildfires damaged her home.
“She had to go to Palm Springs because her house had been damaged inside, and they had to clean everything,” Sager said. “She was down there for a while, and when she came back, I was kind of stunned by how much weight she’d lost.”
Keaton reportedly only spoke to her close family members about her health.
“In her final months, she was surrounded only by her closest family, who chose to keep things very private,” a friend told People. “Even longtime friends weren’t fully aware of what was happening.”
On Oct. 11, news of Keaton’s death devastated her fans and peers alike. A source said her death felt very sudden.
“She declined very suddenly, which was heartbreaking for everyone who loved her,” they said. “It was so unexpected, especially for someone with such strength and spirit.”
Diane Keaton put her house on the market amid health problems, said a source
Just months before her death, Keaton put her California home on the market. She purchased the house in 2017 and extensively renovated it; she even wrote a book about it called The House That Pinterest Built. Keaton said she’d always struggled to put down roots, but she found it easy in this house, describing it as her “dream home.”
Keaton listed the home for $29 million just 8 years after completing renovations. Just two weeks before her death, however, she took the house off the market.
Her friends and peers have commemorated her after her death
News of Keaton’s death was met with an outpouring of tributes from her friends and collaborators.
“Diane, we aren’t ready to lose you,” Keaton’s longtime friend Goldie Hawn wrote in a heartfelt Instagram post. “You’ve left us with a trail of fairy dust, filled with particles of light and memories beyond imagination. How do we say goodbye? What words can come to mind when your heart is broken? You never liked praise, so humble, but now you can’t tell me to ‘shut up’ honey. There was, and will be, no one like you.”
“It’s hard to believe…or accept…that Diane has passed,” wrote Jane Fonda in an Instagram post. “She was always a spark of life and light, constantly giggling at her own foibles, being limitlessly creative…in her acting, her wardrobe, her books, her friends, her homes, her library, her world view. Unique is what she was. And, though she didn’t know it or wouldn’t admit it, man she was a fine actress!”
Other stars, including Robert De Niro, Mark Ruffalo, Viola Davis, and Bette Midler, have praised and mourned Keaton.
