Why Did Foxy Brown and Fellow Rapper Kurupt Break Up?
Foxy Brown and Kurupt were one of hip-hop’s most talked-about couples of the late 1990s. The Brooklyn rapper and the West Coast MC became romantically involved during a period when the East Coast-West Coast rivalry was still a major force in hip-hop. Their relationship eventually led to an engagement, but the two split up before they walked down the aisle.
Recently, Kurupt’s name was back in the headlines when he talked about nearly dying while hospitalized for pancreatitis brought on by alcohol, tobacco, stress, and anxiety, and that his main motivation to recover was not wanting to die or “let God down” for giving him a second chance with his kids and family.
Today, the Dogg Pound rapper is sober and married to a woman named Lisa “LeeLee” Brown, who is also his manager. But many still wonder why his most famous relationship ended.
Here’s what we know about Foxy and Kurupt’s breakup.
Foxy Brown, born Inga DeCarlo Fung Marchand, and Kurupt, born Ricardo Emmanuel Brown, became engaged in 1997. Kurupt said that he genuinely loved Foxy and viewed their relationship as significant because they were among the first prominent hip-hop couples to openly acknowledge their romance.
Their relationship crossed the cultural divide between New York and Los Angeles at a time when tensions between the two regions were still intense. But it ended in 1999 without a trip down the aisle.
Infidelity rumors swirled, and it’s believed the reason for the split was due to Foxy allegedly cheating with another hip-hop artist, DMX.
That same year, Kurupt released the song “Calling Out Names,” a highly confrontational track that included attacks on DMX and references to his former fiancée.
Kurupt later provided his account, explaining that his anger was personal and not part of the broader East Coast-West Coast feud. According to Kurupt, he felt disrespected by what he believed had happened between Foxy and DMX. He emphasized that his response was motivated by his feelings rather than an attempt to manufacture publicity or boost record sales.
Foxy offered an explanation of her own as well. In a 2003 interview with Wendy Williams, she identified the First Lady of Ruff Ryders, Eve, as a major reason for the breakup, alleging that Eve had revealed information about her alleged affair with DMX.
There were also later allegations from rapper Keith Murray, who claimed he had an intimate encounter with Foxy while she was dating Kurupt.
Following their split, Kurupt became engaged to the late Blaque singer and Bring It On actress Natina Reed, with whom he has one son, Tren. Reed died in 2012.
Kurupt was also married to Jovan Brown (who used the stage name Gail Gotti) from 2007 to 2017, before meeting his current wife.
As for Brown, she had a long-term relationship with the Jamaican dancehall artist Spragga Benz and has one daughter, C’yani, who was born in 2017. The “Get Me Home” hitmaker was also linked to Rick Ross, but has never been married.
Foxy and Kurupt’s relationship remains notable because it brought together two figures from opposite sides of rap’s regional divide. Their romance began as a highly publicized example of music-industry power couples, but ended amid the same rivalries, rumors, and personal tensions that often surrounded hip-hop during that time.
