Love Story might be mostly about the lives and romance of John F. Kennedy Jr. and his wife, Carolyn Bessette. Still, the limited series has renewed interest in the late son of John F. Kennedy and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis’s other romantic partners. While JFK Jr., once considered the most eligible bachelor, had plenty of love interests, his romance with Daryl Hannah remains one of his most talked-about. It is an important storyline in Love Story as well. That might have something to do with Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis’ rumored hatred for Daryl Hannah. So, did Jackie Kennedy really despise the Splash star? Hate is a strong word.

How did Daryl Hannah and JFK Jr. meet?

John F. Kennedy Jr. and Daryl Hannah had a long and passionate relationship, but the romance didn’t end with a trip down the aisle. The former flames actually met years before they eventually became a couple. According to People, JFK Jr. and Daryl Hannah first crossed paths in the early 1980s while on separate family vacations. They spent some time together in St. Martin, but nothing ever came of the meeting, and they went their separate ways.

In 1988, they were reintroduced at Lee Radziwill’s wedding. From there, sparks flew. They began dating almost immediately and enjoyed a passionate, but mostly private, romance until 1994, when they called it off. The split made headlines, with the media speculating that JFK Jr.’s family was ultimately to blame for the breakup. The pair split not long before Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis died from non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

Did Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis hate Daryl Hannah?

For years after Daryl Hannah and JFK Jr. went their separate ways, rumors swirled that Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis might have been to blame for the split. Dree Hemingway, who took on the role of Hannah in Love Story, felt that way, too. In a chat with Town & Country, Hemingway said she played Hannah as someone willing to fight to save a relationship. Though she never specifically mentioned Onassis’ influence, it’s clear she felt the scion’s mother played a role in their tumultuous romance.

So, did Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis hate Daryl Hannah? It seems not. Hannah’s stepmother once suggested that there was no animosity from Hannah’s side and that Onassis treated the actor well when they spent time together. Insiders claim that Onassis didn’t believe Hannah was a suitable match for JFK Jr, whose legal career was beginning at the time. That had little to do with Hannah personally, though. According to insiders, Onassis’ reservations had more to do with the difference between the lifestyle Hannah had and the one she envisioned for JFK Jr. In the end, there didn’t appear to be any great disdain or hard feelings. Still, it seems, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis probably didn’t think Daryl Hannah was “the one” for her son.  0

Did she ever meet Carolyn Bessette?

Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis died of non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in 1994, less than a year after her diagnosis. Reports from around that time indicate JFK Jr. didn’t realize just how dire his mother’s diagnosis was. Her death reportedly shocked him. Her passing also occurred before he began dating Carolyn Bessette seriously. JFK Jr.’s wife and his mother never actually met.

Whether or not she would have approved of the New York-born Bessette is still up for debate, but insiders argue that Bessette certainly checked many “boxes” Onassis had for her son’s future partner.  Bessette enjoyed privacy, kept a low profile, and was well educated and well liked in social circles. Her job with Calvin Klein would have been considered an attribute, too. Most people agree that she likely would have seen Bessette as a much more suitable match than Daryl Hannah, though no one will ever know for sure.
