Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs will be headed to prison for the next few years. Judge Arun Subramanian handed down a sentence of 50 months after hearing from the defense, the prosecution, and even Diddy. In the weeks leading up to his sentencing and at the hearing, Diddy’s legal team has argued that he is a changed man who is hoping to use his experience to teach others. His post-prison plans were a key point in his team’s argument for a light 14-month sentence. Such a sentence would have seen Diddy free in just a matter of weeks, given his time served. The prosecution didn’t see it that way. They used Diddy’s future plans as proof of his hubris, noting that the disgraced rap mogul was so sure he was getting off with a “slap on the wrist” that he was booking speaking engagements before he even stood before the court.

Diddy planned speaking engagements ahead of his sentencing hearing

It’s no surprise that Diddy has been planning a comeback while locked away at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn. His legal team and his children have been speaking about his hopes for the future in the lead-up to his sentencing.  Not everyone thinks that’s a good thing, though. The prosecution argued he might have taken those plans just a little too far, too fast, though. Most convicts would wait until after sentencing to start putting their plans in place, especially when their charges carry such a potentially lengthy sentence. Diddy decided against waiting.

According to Newsweek, prosecutors revealed that Diddy had booked multiple speaking engagements for the upcoming weeks, suggesting the music mogul had already decided he would be released within days of the hearing. The prosecution called the move the “height of hubris.” They went on to suggest that Diddy’s actions largely suggested that he still had not grasped the gravity of his crimes or the pain he inflicted on his victims. It also seems to suggest that he believed his ability to hire a top-tier legal team would ensure him a very lenient sentence.

What is the longest sentence he could have faced?

Judge Arun Subramanian factored a lot into his final sentencing decision, including both the prosecution’s and the defense’s suggestions. He also considered the harm that Diddy brought to his victims. Judge Subramanian noted how Diddy’s immense privilege factored into his ability to victimize multiple women for many years. Subramanian addressed those issues while handing down his sentence. While 50 months is substantial, it is nowhere near the maximum that the music mogul could have faced. According to CNN, Diddy will also need to pay a $500,000 fine.

According to several sources, each Mann Act violation carries a potential sentence of up to 10 years behind bars. In theory, Diddy could have faced 20 years in federal prison. That isn’t the prison term the prosecution was seeking, though. The prosecution had suggested a prison term of 11 years before Diddy’s sentencing. His defense team had hoped for just 14 months, with Diddy receiving credit for the months he spent behind bars already. If the rapper had been found guilty of sex trafficking and racketeering, the two charges the jury found him not guilty of, he was facing life behind bars.
