Doja Cat has been spending a fair bit of time on social media talking about her very tumultuous relationship with her actor father. Now, Dumisani Dlamini is speaking out. Or he was until she started receiving backlash. In a now-deleted video, the South African actor claimed his daughter has the “power” to see him if she wants. He’s claiming her childhood memories are false, too. Dlamini insists that she’s been “brainwashed” by her “white mother.”

Where was Doja Cat raised and by whom?

Doja Cat was born and raised mostly in Los Angeles. Her mother, Deborah Elizabeth Sawyer, is a visual artist who later parlayed her talents into a career in fashion design. During a 2020 appearance on VladTV, Doja Cat credited her upbringing for her interest in music, noting that her mother filled her days with art, music, and dance.

While Doja Cat was mostly raised in Los Angeles, she did briefly move to New York City during her childhood. She’s spoken a lot about the woman who raised her, but she’s also made comments about her absentee father, too. The artist has made it abundantly clear over the years that her mother was her primary caregiver, and she did not have a relationship with her father. She seemed mostly apathetic about that fact, noting that she had never met him. In more recent years, she has started opening up about the complicated, distant relationship she has with him. She’s shared her feelings about her father in TikToks she labeled the “Deadbeat Chronicles.”

While she’s been open about the relationship for a long time, the drama between Doja Cat and her father came to a head this month, when she revealed she invited him to her concert in South Africa, but he declined. Doja Cat claims Dlamini said he was “too busy” to attend the show because she didn’t contact him enough. Now he’s clapping back, but almost no one is on his side.

Dumisani Dlamini claims his daughter is ‘brainwashed’

Dumisani Dlamini, Doja Cat’s father, is speaking out after she blasted him on social media and trolled him for declining a concert invite. Dlamini claims that his daughter’s comments that he’s a deadbeat dad are completely off base. The South African actor alleges that his involvement in his child’s life isn’t the problem; he thinks her mother is.

The Shaderoom shared a now-deleted video that Dlamini posted. In the video, Dlamini alleged that Doja Cat’s “white Jewish” mother brainwashed her. He claims she talked their daughter into thinking he didn’t contribute to her upbringing. Dlamini went on to say that he put food on the table for the music artist and insisted that he had never abandoned his child. Dlamini was immediately dragged on social media for the comments. Several users reminded the actor that he was fully aware Deborah Sawyer was white when he met her and had a child with her. Other users questioned how Dlamini could claim he was not absent when his daughter has no memory of ever meeting him.

Things have quieted down for now. Still, we suspect Doja Cat will pop up with another episode of “The Deadbeat Chronicles” sooner rather than later. Dlammini is staying quiet for now.
