Dolly Parton Praised a Collaborator as 1 of the ‘World’s Greatest’ Artists
Dolly Parton primarily writes songs alone, but she has worked with one collaborator several times over the years. Parton herself is a prolific songwriter, but she had high praise for Mac Davis, a singer and songwriter who has worked with many artists over the years. Parton named him as one of the few people she chose to collaborate with.

Parton primarily writes on her own. She sees songwriting as a solitary and near-spiritual practice that she dives into headfirst. Still, she noted that she enjoyed writing with Davis.
“Every once in a while I’ll write with Mac Davis, who is one of our greater songwriters – we write quick and good together – but for the most part I do it on my own,” she told The Guardian in 2016. “I wish I had time to write with more people, but my time is so limited, it takes all I’ve got just to do what I need to do.”
After Davis’ death in 2020, Parton mourned and praised him in a statement.
“Many hearts are broken today, including my own, with the death of one of my dearest friends, Mac Davis,” she wrote. “We lost one of the world’s greatest writers, singers, and entertainers. My love and sympathy goes out to Lisë, his precious wife, his children, and his grandchildren. Rest in peace, my friend. I will always love you, Dolly.”
Parton and Davis collaborated on songs like “White Limozeen” and “Wait ‘Til I Get You Home.”
