Donald Glover Revealed He Had a Stroke in 2024
In a recent appearance at the Camp Flog Gnaw music festival, Donald Glover told the audience that he canceled his 2024 tour after he had a stroke. Glover said that he suffered a series of health problems last year that made touring impossible. Now, Glover said he has a new appreciation for his life.
Donald Glover said he had a stroke while touring
During his performance at the Camp Flog Gnaw music festival in Los Angeles, Glover revealed why he canceled the remainder of his 2024 tour.
“I had a really bad pain in my head in Louisiana, and I did the show anyway,” he said, per USA Today. “I couldn’t really see well.”
After they traveled to Houston, Glover went to the hospital, where doctors informed him that he had a stroke.
“So when we went to Houston, I went to the hospital, and the doctor was like, ‘You had a stroke,’” he said. “And the first thing I thought was like, ‘Oh, here I am still copying Jamie Foxx.‘”
He had to cancel the remainder of his tour and went on to have two other health issues.
“I broke my foot, they found a hole in my heart,” he said. “So I had this surgery, and then I had to have another surgery.
Donald Glover said his stroke taught him to appreciate his life
Glover said that cancelling his tour was not an easy decision. While he knew it was necessary due to his health, Glover said he felt he was “letting everybody down.” Still, he said the experience ultimately led to an increased appreciation for his life.
“Everybody has two lives, and the second life starts when you realize you have one,” he said. “You’ve got one life, guys. And I’ve got to be honest: The life I’ve lived with you guys has been such a blessing. I love seeing and performing for you guys.”
Fans praised Glover for his set at the fest and his candid discussion about his health.
Jamie Foxx had a stroke in 2023
As Glover noted, Jamie Foxx also had a stroke in 2023. That spring, he was hospitalized while filming a movie in Atlanta. Foxx said that, like Glover, his symptoms started with a severe headache. He lost 20 days of memory and had to relearn how to walk after he woke up. He spent months in the hospital and a rehab facility.
“I gotta be honest — when I saw the ‘in memoriam’ [portion of the awards show], I was like man, that could have been me,” he said during the BET Awards (via People). “But I don’t know why I went through what I went through, but I know my second chance I’m not going turn down. I’m not going to turn down.”
Foxx also said that he had a renewed appreciation for life after his experience.
“Whatever reason you put this on me, I promise I’mma do right. I’mma do right in front of y’all, because I know a lot of times, when we get on we forget about where we come from.”
