Every Upcoming ‘Gilmore Girls’ Project (That We Actually Know About)
It has been a decade since Gilmore Girls fans got a new project, but the beloved dramedy is far from dead. Each fall, old fans return for a rewatch, and new fans are constantly finding the series, thanks to streaming service providers. While the original series will never get old, there are some new projects associated with the beloved series in the works. A streaming shakeup, the announcement of two documentaries and a new book are absolutely underway, and there are rumors of more.
HBO Max is producing an official documentary on ‘Gilmore Girls’
Gilmore Girls might have ended years ago, but there is still enough interest to generate new projects. At least, HBO Max thinks so. On August 5, the streaming service provider announced plans for an official Gilmore Girls documentary, featuring behind-the-scenes footage. It will be the first-ever sanctioned documentary about the series in its 25-plus-year history.
The still-untitled film is directed by Bonni Cohen and is told from the perspective of creator Amy Sherman-Palladino alongside her husband and executive producer, Daniel Palladino. According to the official logline, it will reveal “how the show eclipsed expectations to become a cross-generational phenomenon.” Lauren Graham, Sherman-Palladino, and additional key cast members are signed on for the project, but an official release date has not been announced.
There’s also an unofficial documentary in the works
Separately, and less glamorously, an unauthorized documentary called Drink Coffee, Talk Fast has been produced by Ink On Paper Studios. The production was originally funded via Kickstarter, with a summer 2026 premiere. Unlike the HBO Max project, Drink Coffee, Talk Fast is not a sanctioned documentary and did not have Sherman-Palladino’s buy-in. Lauren Graham confirmed in September 2025 that she wouldn’t appear, explaining plainly, “I don’t do anything that the creator of my show isn’t a part of, so, so far, no.”
Despite Graham sitting it out, the unofficial doc has still managed to land interviews with other cast members, including Kelly Bishop (Emily Gilmore) and Keiko Agena (Lane Kim). Both were happy to be involved. Chad Michael Murray and Jared Padalecki, who played Tristan DuGray and Dean Forrester, respectively, are both linked to the project, too. A wider release date remains unknown.
Lauren Graham and Amy Sherman-Palladino’s New Book
Lauren Graham and Amy Sherman-Palladino’s buy-in on a documentary about the show comes months after the actor and director announced their plans to pen a book about their time on the set of Gilmore Girls. The book, they promise, will take readers behind the scenes on the series, and include never-before-heard stories.
The project was announced during a broadcast of Today, though additional updates have been few and far between. Graham’s last update on the project suggested she and her co-author hadn’t gotten too far in the process, so a 2026 release date won’t be happening, but a Fall 2027 publication date feels like a real possibility. The project does not yet have a name.
A new revival is still just a rumor, though
The upcoming projects are sure to keep Gilmore Girls alive, but rumors are still swirling that a script revival could be on the way. It appears that won’t be happening, despite years of rumors and fan campaigns. That doesn’t mean it won’t ever happen, though.
Several key cast members are keeping the door open, just in case a new script comes their way. Lauren Graham has said in the past she’d “play this character given any opportunity.” Scott Patterson, who played Luke Danes, and Agena and Bishop have all said they’d be interested in returning to the set if given the chance, too.
For now, the upcoming projects will need to do.
