Over the years, Ray J has been inflammatory and made a lot of bold statements about his ex and her family, but this is the first time Kardashian is making a legal bid to silence him.

Kim Kardashian and her mother, Kris Jenner, filed a defamation lawsuit in Los Angeles County Superior Court against Ray J, whose legal name is William Ray Norwood Jr., earlier this month. The lawsuit accuses him of fabricating claims that federal investigators are pursuing a “RICO” case against them. The lawsuit stems from two separate incidents in which Ray J publicly discussed the family engaging in racketeering.
According to the filing, Ray J alluded to the family’s involvement in racketeering back in May, during an appearance in a TMZ documentary. That comment, which occurred during an interview for a documentary about Sean ‘Diddy Combs, Ray J quipped that he “might believe” the Kardashians were being investigated for racketeering. His famous ex let that one go. The comment that triggered the lawsuit came four months later when Ray J took to a livestream to claim the “feds were coming” for the family, and were investigating them for racketeering.
Kim Kardashian and Kris Jenner’s lawyer, Alex Spiro, has stated that Ray J is obsessed with his past relationship with Kim Kardashian and has regularly harassed her in the years since their brief romance ended. They are seeking compensation and punative damages.
Ray J is the man in the sextape that launched Kim Kardashian’s career. They dated off and on from 2002 until 2005. She was about 22 when they met, and roughly 25 when the romance ended. Since then, they both seemed to move on. Ray J has had a turbulent relationship with Princess Love. They’ve filed for divorce a handful of times. Kim Kardashian went on to marry and divorce twice and have another high-profile romance.
Ray J has doubled down on social media, but he hasn’t responded in court
Ray J doesn’t have the fame or money that his ex does. Still, he seems completely unbothered by the lawsuit. According to the Los Angeles Times, the Grammy nominee has not mounted a legal defense just yet. He has, however, taken to social media to throw more barbs towards the famous Kardashian clan.
Ray J insists that he “won’t be silenced” amid the legal maneuverings. In a rather inexplicable move, he has seemingly doubled down on his allegation. Still, proof that a federal investigation into the family has been launched has yet to materialize. It will be interesting to see what his next move is. In theory, he could petition the court to dismiss the lawsuit.

Spiro argues that their limited legal pursuits speak to the serious nature of Ray J’s allegations. The assertion comes as a bit of a shock. After all, Kardashian and Jenner have been in the entertainment world for decades now. It seems wild to think that they’ve never been sued or sued anyone.
The statement isn’t accurate in the broad sense. Over the last two decades, the family has been involved in multiple lawsuits. Still, Spiro’s statement is correct regarding defamation. Kardashian and Jenner have dealt with copyright infringement and trademark issues. According to CBS News, Kardashian once sued Old Navy. The Judd Foundation filed a lawsuit against her in 2024. There is even an ongoing sexual harassment lawsuit. Still, this is the first time the family has felt compelled to file a defamation lawsuit, despite much of what has been said about them over the years.
