Fans Say Travis and Jason Kelce’s Support of the US Women’s Hockey Team Proves MAGA Rumors Are False
Amid backlash against the US Men’s hockey team, Travis and Jason Kelce are getting praise for their support of the women’s team. In a phone call to the men’s team, Donald Trump joked about having to invite the women’s team to the White House as well. Fans believe that the Kelce brothers’ support of the women’s team disproves certain rumors about them.
The US Men’s hockey team faced backlash after a joke about the women’s team
Trump called the men’s hockey team after their gold medal win in Milan. He invited them to the State of the Union and said he’d have to bring the women’s team as well. They also won gold.
“I must tell you, we’re going to have to bring the women’s team,” he added, laughing. “You do know that. I do believe I probably would be impeached [if I didn’t].”
Many of the players laughed in response, sparking backlash. Women’s captain Hilary Knight addressed the situation.
“I thought it was sort of a distasteful joke, and unfortunately, that is overshadowing a lot of the success, the success of just women at the Olympics carrying for Team USA and having amazing gold medal feats,” Knight said, per USA Today. “We’re just focusing on celebrating the women in our room, the extraordinary efforts, and continue to celebrate three gold medals in program history as well as the double gold for both men’s and women’s at the same time. And really not detract from that with a distasteful joke.”
The women’s team declined the invitation to the State of the Union address.
Travis and Jason Kelce showed support for the US Women’s hockey team
On a recent episode of Kylie Kelce’s podcast, hockey player Laila Edwards jokingly described herself as the “best athlete to come out of Cleveland Heights.” The city is also the Kelce brothers’ hometown.
On his podcast, New Heights, Travis, who played hockey while growing up, joked that he has “two banners in the Cleveland Heights hockey rink. Still, he let her keep the title.
“But I’ll let you have [the title] because you’re the only one to have gold, so a little tip of the cap to you, Laila,” he said. “That was awesome to see you go and get it.”
He added that he was proud of her for winning gold. His comments, particularly amid the controversy over the men’s team, have garnered praise.
“I’ve never kept up with sports but honestly they seem like real solid guys so good on them for using their money and platform for good,” wrote one Reddit user.
Many people also pointed to the rumor that the Kelces are Trump supporters. Some of Taylor Swift’s fans have criticized him for this. People have taken Travis’ comments about the hockey player as proof that he is further left politically.
“I can’t believe people are out here pushing the narrative that Travis is MAGA omg,” wrote one person.
“The Kelce brothers donating time, money, and their voice to ‘liberal’ and diverse causes? Likely place for them to be actually because I pay attention to what they actually do and not weird headlines and smear campaigns,” added someone else.
Travis and Jason Kelce helped Laila Edwards’ family get to Milan
Before the Olympics, Travis and Jason donated $10,000 to help get Edwards’ family to Milan to support her.
“OMG, thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to notice us little people and support us,” Charone Gray Edwards, Laila’s mother, said (per the NHL). “Like, that was huge because the Kelces don’t know us. The only connection is Cleveland Heights. I really appreciate it.”
Laila praised the brothers for their support.
“So I mean, those are just really good guys,” Laila said. “They’re really good people, too, outside of their athletic abilities.”
