Fans Slam Hugh Jackman as ‘The Greatest Sellout’ After Performance at Rupert Murdoch’s Birthday
Billionaire Rupert Murdoch recently celebrated his 95th birthday, and Hugh Jackman was there to help him ring in the occasion. Jackman has known the conservative media mogul for years and is close with his family. Still, his presence at the event has not impressed people. Here’s how fans have reacted to Jackman’s performance.
Hugh Jackman recently performed at billionaire Rupert Murdoch’s birthday party
Murdoch celebrated his 95th birthday at The Grill in Manhattan. Jackman was in attendance at the event, and he performed for the billionaire. According to People, Jackman sang songs from his film The Greatest Showman, as well as covers of Frank Sinatra’s “Fly Me to the Moon” and “(Theme From) New York, New York.” He closed out his performance with Peter Allen’s “I Still Call Australia Home.”
Ivanka Trump, one of Jackman’s friends, was reportedly “cheering him on” throughout his performance. Other celebrity guests included Andrew Lloyd Webber, former Prime Minister Tony Blair, former House Speaker Paul Ryan, and NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell. Donald Trump also sent a video message to Murdoch.
People were not impressed by his presence at the event
Jackman’s presence at the party has not gone over well with fans. One Reddit user dubbed him “The Greatest Sellout” for celebrating the Fox News mogul. Murdoch has been described as an oligarch because of his immense wealth and political power.
“Sure hope he was paid a gob of cash,” added another user, sarcastically. “Poor guy has been struggling lately. Nice that he finally got a job.”
“That wolverine money must be running out,” wrote another person.
Some people pointed out that Jackman may not agree with Murdoch politically, but they still don’t think he should have attended the party.
“Just gross. I’m a Hugh fan and I know he’s an Aussie, but he’s on the wrong side of history,” wrote one person. “At least he got to do a little dance for the master.”
While many people said they found his performance “disappointing,” others said people shouldn’t be surprised that Jackman celebrated Murdoch.
“He’s been friends with Rupert Murdoch for 20 years,” wrote one person. “You are the company you keep, as they say.”
Hugh Jackman is the godfather of Rupert Murdoch’s daughters
While Jackman’s appearance at Murdoch’s birthday party surprised many of his fans, they have been friendly for years. In 2010, Jackman and Nicole Kidman became the godparents to Murdoch’s youngest two daughters. They attended their baptism beside the River Jordan, at what is believed to be the baptismal site of Jesus Christ.
Afterward, Queen Rania of Jordan took the Murdochs, Kidman, Keith Urban, Jackman, and Ivanka Trump on a tour of the country.
“I am happy to be sharing this land that I love with my friends,” she said, per The Guardian. “We’re a small country but we’re rich with history and culture… Our guests were blown away by the diversity and depth of what Jordan has to offer, but most of all, they told me they were taken in by the warmth and kindness of our people.”
