‘Gilmore Girls’: Arielle Kebbel Says Dean Cheating on Lindsay Made More Sense Than Their Marriage
It has been nearly two decades since the final episode of Gilmore Girls aired. It has been two decades since Rory Gilmore shocked fans by losing her virginity to her married ex-boyfriend. For years, fans have bemoaned the decision to have Dean cheat on his wife, Lindsay Lister. They’ve debated the entire situation over and over again, with some fans still shocked it happened. Arielle Kebbel, the actor who portrayed Lindsay Lister, isn’t shocked at all. She wasn’t surprised when she first learned what would be happening.
Arielle Kebbel said Dean’s cheating made perfect sense
In a recent appearance on I Am All In, a podcast hosted by Scott Patterson, Arielle Kebbel chatted about her time on Gilmore Girls and how people feel about her character. While many fans want justice for Lindsay, the actor insists she didn’t take the storyline personally. She said she found the entire situation pretty believable.
Kebbel revealed that she found Dean’s infidelity more likely than the marriage itself. She stated, “I remember reading the script, and I actually thought that the cheating made more sense than us getting married.” She acknowledged that she was deeply shocked when she learned her character was marrying her short-term boyfriend directly after high school. Kebbel’s reasoning makes perfect sense. It certainly seems more believable that a teen would cheat on his partner, especially with someone he never got over, than marry her at 18.
Why did the very young duo get married?
Kebbel brought up an interesting point during her podcast appearance. They were incredibly young and had only been dating a handful of months before the proposal. It was rushed and felt utterly out of place. So, why did they get married in the first place? Kebbel didn’t seem to know.

Showrunner Amy Sherman-Palladino has never explained what motivated her to pen the teen marriage storyline. Gilmore Girls fans have floated multiple theories over the years, though. Some fans have wondered if a pregnancy scare caused the proposal. Others have suggested that a desire to have sex motivated the pair. A few fans even think a fight between the lovers led to an impromptu engagement.
While they are all solid theories, we think Dean’s proposal was a delayed response to the disastrous end of his relationship with Rory. He may have been motivated to hold onto Lindsay because of the way he “lost” Rory to Jess Mariano. Marriage offered him a sense of security he could never find with Rory.
