Gracie Abrams Said Taylor Swift Nearly Lost Her Multi-Million Dollar Penthouse in a Fire After a Night of Drinking
Taylor Swift and Gracie Abrams grew close while working together on the Eras Tour and collaborating on the song “Us.” Swift and Abrams once also navigated a potentially dangerous situation together. After a night of dinner and drinks, the two singers spent the night at Swift’s Tribeca penthouse. In the morning, they discovered a fire burning in the kitchen.
Gracie Abrams and Taylor Swift woke up to a fire in her penthouse
Despite their 10-year age difference, Abrams and Swift became friends after the former was an opener on the Eras Tour. They once got dinner and lots of drinks in New York. Afterward, they went to Swift’s expansive Tribeca penthouse.
At some point in the night, Swift and Abrams heard a loud thunk. Swift said it was likely one of her cats playing around, and they ignored it. Around 6 a.m., though, they learned that they’d heard a candle falling over. Despite the early hour and late night before it, Swift jumped into action.
“She was such a legend – I don’t know how at this hour or in our state she knew what to do,” Abrams told Billboard. “We both had an insane cough from the fire extinguisher fumes for weeks.”
Though the kitchen’s center island was ablaze, Abrams admitted she wasn’t much help. As Swift put out the fire, she filmed it all, laughing.
The ‘Cruel Summer’ singer has a compound in Tribeca
Swift’s penthouse is only one part of her sprawling Tribeca property. Per Page Six, the singer bought a 7-bedroom townhouse from director Peter Jackson in 2014. She then bought three penthouse units in the building next door for around $10 million each.
Swift combined the top two floors to create one 8,300-square-foot duplex. In total, she owns $50 million worth of property on the Tribeca block. If the fire had continued to blaze, Swift could have been looking at millions in damages.
Gracie Abrams said she enjoyed working with Taylor Swift
Before Abrams met Swift, she was a fan of her music.
“When I met [Swift], it kind of felt like we had known each other already, which I’m sure there was an element of just like the parasocial relationship thing,” she told The Sunday Times. “I’ve grown up with her voice in my headphones my entire life.”
As a result, it felt like the experience of a lifetime when she was able to open for Swift on the Eras Tour.
“Being a part of that tour in a tiny way has changed the course of my life in so many ways,” she told People.
She said she learned a lot about how to have a music career and now considers Swift a mentor.
“She’s just the most unbelievable performer and the most generous friend and the fact that she…took a chance on me is, I think, why I get to be in this room tonight,” Abrams said. “It’s not lost on me that her belief in me has really just…done a lot. So, I’m deeply grateful to her, forever.”
