Gwyneth Paltrow Says She Lost an Acting Job Over the Term ‘Conscious Uncoupling’
Do you remember when Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin announced their divorce? Most people do, but not because the split was dramatic or scandal-driven. Everyone remembers their split because of the wording of their separation announcement. The duo said they were “consciously uncoupling.” The term gave everyone “the ick” so bad that it had actual career implications. Paltrow recently revealed she lost an acting job because of the wording of the announcement.
Gwyneth Paltrow says ‘consciously uncoupling’ cost her a job
It has been years since Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin separated. They have achieved their goal of co-parenting effectively and keeping their divorce amicable, at least as far as the public is concerned. Still, there was fallout from the end of their union. Fans didn’t care that they split, but they certainly cared about the wording of the announcement. They cared so much about the announcement that it actually cost Paltrow a job.
The famed actor sat down for a chat on Amy Poehler’s podcast, Good Hang, recently. She opened up about her split, revealing that she had an acting job booked before she announced the end of her marriage via a blog post on Goop, but lost it after the “conscious uncoupling” controversy swept the media. She told Poehler that the distributor decided she was too hot to touch at that point, and she was removed from the project. Paltrow did not mention what movie she was referring to.
While Paltrow was fired from one job, the use of the term “consciously uncoupling” didn’t stunt her career in the long term. She has since appeared in dozens of projects, including several Marvel films. Chris Martin’s career is doing just fine, too.
How long were Chris Martin and Gwyneth Paltrow married?
Chris Martin and Gwyneth Paltrow’s marriage ended in 2014 after 12 years together. The couple first met at a Coldplay concert in 2002. He was performing with Coldplay, and she was spending some time backstage. Their romance took off, and by 2003, they had wed. The duo welcomed their first child, Apple, together in 2004. They received harsh criticism for their daughter’s name at the time. In 2006, their son, Moses, was born.
Chris Martin and Gwyneth Paltrow’s separation and subsequent divorce remained a pretty private affair, save for the discourse over the term “conscious uncoupling.” They finalized the split in July 2016 after initially announcing their plans to divorce in March 2014. While they announced their split in 2014, Paltrow did not file until more than a year later.
Since then, they’ve both moved on. Paltrow married Brad Falchuk in 2018. Martin spent several years in an on-again-off-again relationship with Dakota Johnson. He was first linked to the actor in 2017, but they appear to have split for good in recent months. Martin has been rumored to be dating Sophie Turner, though neither has confirmed a romance.
