Hayden Panettiere’s death at 36 shocked the world. Her decision to reconnect with Brian Hickerson in the months leading up to her death from a suspected overdose is even more shocking. Panettiere opened up about the relationship several times over the years, noting its toxic and cyclic nature, most notably in her memoir. Now, as a death investigation looms, fans have grown even more interested in the complicated romance. Let’s take a look back at it all.

How They Met

Panettiere and Hickerson began dating in 2018, shortly after her split from Ukrainian boxer Wladimir Klitschko. Hickerson, a South Carolina native who’d relocated to Los Angeles to pursue real estate and acting, was reportedly introduced to Panettiere through her brother.

While things started out well enough, the relationship quickly spiraled into something far more volatile than a traditional love story. In May 2019, Hickerson was arrested on felony domestic violence charges after police reportedly observed redness and marks on Panettiere’s body. The case was later dismissed after prosecutors couldn’t secure a key witness.

The couple briefly split and reconciled multiple times over the following months. Things were briefly quiet, but in February 2020, Hickerson was arrested again, this time in Wyoming. During the arrest, he was accused of punching Panettiere in the face. He faced an eight-count criminal case. The charges included battery, injuring a spouse or girlfriend, and witness intimidation. Panettiere was granted a restraining order against him in July 2020. Not long after, she publicly confirmed the abuse in an Instagram post that summer. At the time, she said she hoped speaking out might help others in similar situations.

In 2021, Hickerson pleaded no contest to two felony counts of injuring a spouse or girlfriend, with the remaining six charges dismissed. He was sentenced to 45 days in jail, though he served less than 35. Hickerson was placed on probation upon his release, was ordered to take domestic violence classes, and told to stay away from Panettiere. He also paid a $500 fine.

A Complicated Reconciliation

Despite the abuse and legal fallout, Panettiere and Hickerson reconciled after his release, a decision she addressed candidly in a 2021 interview with The New York Times. Panettiere, at the time, insisted Hickerson was committed to continued recovery. The pair spent plenty of time on-again-and-off-again in the years that followed. In 2022, they appeared to split for good. The following year, her brother, Jansen, died of an undiagnosed heart condition.

Panettiere was unflinchingly honest about the abuse she suffered in her 2026 memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning. Hickerson also spoke publicly earlier this year about what was said about him in the book. He acknowledged what he’d done and said he understood the backlash he was receiving. At the time, it appeared that Panettiere and Hickerson were not together, though it became apparent in the days leading up to her death that they had rekindled their romance.

They Were Together on the Day She Died

According to police reports and multiple news outlets, Panettiere and Hickerson flew from Los Angeles to South Carolina together the day before she died. Hickerson and his brother, Zach, were the ones who called 911 after finding her unresponsive at the residence where she’d been temporarily staying. Hickerson reportedly showed responding officers a bag of her medications. Investigators have said the preliminary probe found no signs of foul play or trauma, and an autopsy revealed nothing consistent with physical harm.

The official cause of death remains pending toxicology results, and authorities have not named Hickerson a suspect. According to TMZ, police have been spotted at Hickerson’s family home in the days following Panettiere’s death. An investigation continues, though police have not stated that they believe any criminal act directly influenced her death.

It is unclear why the pair flew from Los Angeles to South Carolina. Panettiere spent most of her time in Los Angeles working. Her daughter, Kaya, lives in Ukraine with Wladimir Klitschko. Panettiere also discussed signing over custody of Kaya, postpartum depression, and a delivery that nearly killed her, in the memoir, too.

This is a developing story.
