Hayden Panettiere’s Death: DEA Probing Alleged Dealer as Fentanyl Theory Emerges
It has been nearly a month since Hayden Panettiere’s death from an assumed overdose. The star had a long and complicated history with substance abuse and mental health struggles, which she documented in a heart-wrenchingly honest memoir. It was published just months before her death. Now, a death investigation has been launched, and reports suggest the DEA is zeroing in on a drug dealer who may have sold the actress a pill laced with fentanyl.
Details on the day Hayden Panettiere died emerge
The details of Hayden Panettiere’s death emerged within hours of her passing. Initial reports suggested the Heroes star had been found unresponsive inside a Greenville, South Carolina home after her on-again-off-again boyfriend’s brother went to the residence to rouse her for a planned meet-up. Her controversial partner, Brian Hickerson, was reportedly asleep in the other room when his brother arrived.
A 911 call was placed from the residence, and emergency responders rushed to her aid. Advanced lifesaving measures were unsuccessful, and Panettiere was pronounced dead at 36. While her cause of death was not made available immediately, an overdose was suspected early on. It is unclear what Panettiere was doing in South Carolina, though her birthday was just days away, and sources claim she and Hickerson had reconnected not long before her death. Their troubled relationship, outlined in her memoir, began in 2018.
A death investigation is looking at possibly laced pills
In the weeks since Hayden Panettiere died, Greenville police have launched a death investigation. The DEA later joined the investigation and is said to be searching for a drug dealer who may have sold Panettiere a fatal pill. According to TMZ, police are working on the theory that a “long time drug dealer” in the Los Angeles area supplied Panettiere with black-market prescription drugs. Oxycodone are believed to be among the drugs sold to her.
According to a source speaking to the outlet, the actress is believed to have taken several drugs the day before her death. The theory suggests she took an oxycodone pill that may have been laced with fentanyl the morning she died. Sources said she obtained the drugs from this dealer before flying to South Carolina the day before her death.
Neither the DEA nor the Greenville Police Department, which is leading the investigation, has confirmed this theory. Toxicology tests are reportedly still being conducted. While an official statement from a law enforcement agency has not been released, sources claim investigators may be zeroing in on those they believe are responsible for Panettiere’s fatal overdose.
A similar investigation was launched after the death of Matthew Perry in 2023. The Friends star died from a fatal ketamine overdose at his Pacific Palisades home. Five people were arrested in connection with his death; all five pleaded guilty and have been sentenced.
No arrests have been made in Panettiere’s death at this time. Sources did not indicate when or if an arrest will come.
