Duff said that this was inspired by one of her real relationships, but she said she wouldn’t reveal who she’s singing about. “If I wanted to say who, I would,” she said.
“It’s definitely about a relationship that I had. It was very brief with someone older than me, and that was not illegal, but inappropriate when you have this much time removed from it,” she told Glamour. “Everybody speculates, but I’m not sure they got it right….”
Duff rose to fame as a child, and admitted that this made it difficult to date people her own age.
“I think that it’s super nuanced and it’s hard to defend certain things that have happened in my life,” she said. “But the one thing that I’ll say is, working as an adult since I was 10 years old, it’s very hard to have relationships with people your own age.”

A number of people have speculated that Duff’s song could be about Joel Madden. They started dating when she was 16, and he was 25. Despite this, Madden shared his wife Nicole Richie’s post praising it.
“‘Mature’ is not the word I would use to describe us,” she wrote on a picture of herself and Duff laughing together in the grass, “but regardless, this song is a BOP.”
Madden reposted this to his account. Duff has said that she and her husband, Matthew Koma, have gotten close with Richie and Madden.
