Hilary Duff Said Families Don’t Always Stay Together in Rare Comments Amid Rift With Sister Haylie
While Hilary Duff and her sister, Haylie Duff, once appeared to have a close relationship, rumors that they are estranged have long circulated. Neither sister has confirmed these rumors, but Hilary wrote about her family on her upcoming album. She acknowledged that there is a rift in her family.
Hilary Duff and Haylie Duff are reportedly not on speaking terms
During their adolescence, Hilary and Haylie were close. They appeared in films together and collaborated on music. Since 2019, however, Hilary and Haylie have not been photographed together. At the time of Hilary’s wedding to Matthew Koma in 2019, some sources reported that Haylie was not in attendance. The sisters have also not interacted on social media.
This year, Haylie added fuel to the speculation when she appeared to side with Ashley Tisdale in her essay about toxic mom drama. Many have speculated that Tisdale was writing about Hilary’s friend group in her essay.
In her new song “We Don’t Talk,” Hilary appears to reference her relationship with Haylie.
“Let’s have it out / I’ll hear you out, you’ll hear me out on the couch / Get back to how we were as kids / Let’s break it down / So sick of being so sad about / How we don’t talk and you won’t talk about it,” she sings.
Hilary Duff spoke about her family during her rift with Haylie Duff
Hilary will delve into her relationship with her family on her upcoming album Luck … or Something. She acknowledged that there is some kind of familial rift.
“That’s my family. Those are the people that affect you the most, take up the most space naturally as a human who’s born into something,” she told Glamour. “Just because you’re born into a family doesn’t mean that it always stays together. You can only control your side and your street….”
She added that she didn’t see a way around addressing her personal relationships on the album. It felt necessary.
“I’ve had a very complicated life, and my parents had a very complicated thing,” she said. “I know it’s not rare, and I think it goes back to the theme of, Why share now? I guess I just felt ready.”
She spoke about life with her own family
Duff now has a family of her own. She has one child with ex-husband Mike Comrie, and three children with Koma. She admitted that balancing motherhood with her career hasn’t always been easy.
“It’s a hard battle to fight to be like, Oh, I matter; I’m going to get a workout in. Why is there so much guilt around an hour spent in the day for yourself when you keep everything afloat?” she said. “It’s really so hard. And having a partner that wants what I want and can build me up and support me in the way that he has, I think makes a big difference. But also, your brain has to flip a switch and be like, I’m choosing this for me. I have to do this. My kids are going to be fine.”
Koma believes his wife’s ability to be both a mom and an artist is setting a good example for their children.
“What a rad example to be able to set for our kids,” he said. “That you could be there for them in the capacity that she is — of all the things that she is, it’s a mother that she’s best at, and a partner and a family member. So I think it’s really special to see that come to life. She can do that, and she can also follow these passions in a very real and successful way.”
