Hilary Duff Shared How a ‘Crisis’ Inspired 1 of Her Most Eye-Catching Looks
In 2015, Hilary Duff traded her signature blonde hair for blue locks. She revisited the look several years later, but she said the first time she dyed her hair blue was likely a response to personal upheaval. In some ways, she regretted her decision.
Hilary Duff joked that a crisis caused her to dye her hair blue
In 2015, Duff dyed her hair blue. At the time, she said the water in Cabo San Lucas inspired her. With distance, though, she has started to see this as a reaction to changes in her life.
“She was probably in crisis, this girl,” she said on Hot Ones.
Duff and her husband, Mike Comrie, had recently divorced. She wondered if this made her want to reinvent herself.
“Why did I need to do that? Who was she trying to be?” she said. “I don’t know. I think I was dealing with a breakup.”
Still, she later dyed her hair the shade again after having her daughter, Mae.
“Then I had a baby during COVID, like everybody else. Dyed my own hair at home almost that color,” she said. “Gave birth with blue hair. What? Why? Blue hair. I had a girl.”
She said that dying her hair a bright color became more trouble than it was worth.
“It’s so much work to keep a bright, nice color like that,” she said. “You have to bleach your hair first of all, terrible for your hair. And then you have to constantly put like color in your conditioner and keep up with that. Masks constantly, like annoying.”
She said her breakup with Mike Comrie left her feeling disenchanted with marriage
Duff and Comrie tied the knot in 2010 after three years together. She said that while they were “really happy” for most of their time together, she eventually realized that things weren’t working out. Their primary focus in the divorce was their son, Luca, which allowed them to move forward on friendly terms.
“It wasn’t working well enough to stay together, but there was still a lot of love involved,” she told Cosmopolitan (via Us Weekly). “It was just a slow set-in of us not being the match that we used to be. I’m lucky for the person he is and I am and how we decided to handle this.”
While she and Comrie have a good co-parenting relationship, Duff admitted her divorce changed her perspective on marriage.
“I don’t want to sound bitter because I’m definitely not,” she said. “But I don’t know if people are meant to be together forever. Things happen over a long relationship that you can’t always fight. A marriage of 20 years, the accomplishment of that must feel really great, but there are also huge sacrifices. I just always want to fight for happiness.”
She has since married Matthew Koma.
Hilary Duff’s hairstylist shared how to achieve her signature waves
Duff’s hair is now back to blonde, her signature color. She often wears her hair in loose waves. Her hairstylist, Barb Thompson, shared how to achieve this look.
“Creating that signature bounce on Hilary Duff for ‘Call Her Daddy’ was all about building airy structure from the prep stage,” she told WWD. “Lightweight hydration, strategic blow-dry memory, and then sealing it with soft movement rather than tight curls.”
Thompson said that she uses both a round brush and a blow dryer to get her hair ready for styling.
“I followed with a 2.5-inch round brush to sculpt a smooth, airy base that still has movement,” she said. “A blow-dry like this is also an important way to create the perfect canvas for curling iron work.”
To complete the look, Thompson applied a finishing spray before using smaller curling irons for added volume and bounce.
“I focus on keeping the finish touchable and modern so the volume feels effortless, never overdone. The goal is a polished blowout that still has that cool, lived-in energy when she moves.”
