Hilary Duff’s latest album delves into her relationships with her dad and sister. While there has long been speculation about her relationship with Haylie Duff, she has largely kept quiet about her relationship with Robert Duff. She said she believes her childhood is what brought them to this point.

Hilary Duff spoke about her relationship with her dad

On her latest album, Luck…or Something, Duff sings about her father on “The Optimist.”

“I wish I could sleep on planes / And that my father would really love me / He’d show up on my wedding day / And tell my family they’re all so lucky / He’d tell me how he wish he’d stayed / And that he never meant to disappoint me / But ’til then I’ll exist as the optimist,” she sings in the chorus.

Duff admitted her relationship with her father has had its ups and downs over the years.

“There’s times where I talk to my dad and times where I don’t talk to my dad,” she told Rolling Stone. “I do have a pretty sunny disposition, but a lot of s*** has gone down, and that’s life.”

She believes that the problems between herself and her father stem from her childhood success. Duff rose to massive fame on Lizzie McGuire and continued to find success in music, film, and television.

“I think it’s really challenging for one person to have major success in a family,” she told CBS Mornings. “In ‘The Optimist,’ that’s what it feels like for me. And I’m sure it has to feel like that for him. Although I’m the kid. And it’s been hard to get back to a place of health.”

She said she wanted to write about her relationship with her family members on the album because it’s her “truth.”
