Hilary Duff has returned to the music scene with a hit. It is the first song she’s put out in a decade, and it has everyone talking. While the song is catchy, its subject matter is what has really caught everyone’s attention. The song, “Mature,” appears to be about an age-gap relationship. Duff is no stranger to those. She was a teen who found herself in a relationship with an older man back in the early 2000s. The song has everyone revisiting the romance between Hilary Duff and Joel Madden. Still, the song might not be about him. There are enough references to make a case for it really being about Leonardo DiCaprio, or, at the very least, men like him.

Hilary Duff just reminded everyone that she dated Joel Madden when she was a teenager

Back in 2004, Hilary Duff was a 16-year-old actor and singer. Joel Madden was a rock star more than eight years her senior. That didn’t deter him from pursuing her romantically. While the couple didn’t announce their romance until 2005, via her mother, it is largely believed that they had been dating quietly for a year beforehand. He was 25 years old.

The romance initially caught fans off guard, with many noting the substantial age gap and difference in life experiences. The pair split in 2007, but Duff insisted all of the age gap discussion felt overblown and completely unnecessary. At the time, she told CosmoGirl that their split had nothing to do with their age difference. Years later, she revisited the romance, insisting that everyone had made assumptions about what she was doing as a teenager, all because of her relationship.

While Duff sings about an age gap romance and her own experience in her newest song, he has not said it’s about Madden. In fact, she and the rocker are still amicable. They are neighbors. Hilary Duff and Madden’s wife, Nicole Richie, are friends. Madden and Richie wed in 2010. Ritchie actually commented on the song.  If the song isn’t about Madden, it begs fans to figure out who it actually is about. Duff might have left some clues.

Is ‘Mature’ really about Leonardo DiCaprio?

Hilary Duff’s connection to Joel Madden is being heavily discussed due to her newest song, but the lyrics actually point to a celebrity who is much more well-known for dating women significantly younger than himself. Several lyrics appear to call out Leonardo DiCaprio by name. In one portion of the song, she croons that it’s “Very Leo of you with your Scorpio touch.” Leonardo DiCaprio is a Scorpio. Another lyric references artist Jean-Michael Basquiat. Duff Sings “Going down on her on your vintage rug / Bet she’s so impressed by your Basquiat…” DiCaprio was famously gifted a Basquiat painting that was estimated to be worth $9 million.

Duff previously noted that the song is partially about an experience she had a “very long time ago.” While there is no credible evidence that Duff ever dated or was pursued by DiCaprio, the Hollywood heavyweight is well known for dating women many years his junior. He’s currently in a relationship with Vittoria Ceretti, a 27-year-old model. DiCaprio is 51. She is actually the oldest woman he has ever dated. Before Ceretti, he dated Camila Morrone from 2017 until 2022. She was just 20 years old when romance blossomed.
