After playing his college ball for the Michigan Wolverines, Dominique Stephon “Nico” Collins was selected by the Houston Texans in the third round of the 2021 NFL Draft.

Collins had his breakout year in 2023, finishing the season 8th in the league in receiving yards and tied for 4th in receptions of 20 yards or more. He was named to the Pro Bowl in 2024 and 2025 and has become a reliable target for quarterback C.J. Stroud.

Now, fans want to know more about the star wide receiver and his life away from the gridiron. Here’s more on Collins and his girlfriend, Sam Roy.

How long Collins and Roy have been together

Collins and Samantha Catherine Roy first crossed paths when they were both students at the University of Michigan.

Like Collins, Roy was a student athlete as well as she was on the university’s gymnastics team.

The Chesterfield, Michigan native started practicing gymnastics in 2012 and trained at Hunts Gymnastics Academy. Roy competed for the Wolverines on the 2017 and 2018 Big Ten Championship teams. She also earned All-Big 10 academic honors and the U-M Academic Achievement Award. In 2019, before leaving the team, Roy helped the Wolverines win the Big 10 championship and became an assistant coach.

She and Collins reportedly bonded over their love of sports and became Instagram official in September 2020.

Why Roy left the gymnastics team

Roy decided to leave the team in 2020 because she was dealing with an injury and some things outside of the gym, so she wanted to focus on her mental health.

“My mental health wasn’t in a good place. I wasn’t recognizing it because I was focused on my goals in the gym,” she told the school’s newspaper. “I was very quiet about that stuff. When it came time to step away, my initial reaction was anger. I felt like I had failed myself.”

Roy later co-founded the Student-Athlete Sexual Health (S.A.S.H.) initiative to help those impacted by sexual abuse and harassment.

She graduated with a degree in neuroscience.

Collins and Roy aren’t shy about sharing their love for each other on social media

Roy has become Collins’ biggest cheerleader and is often seen at games rooting for her man, something she has called her “favorite weekend activity.”

The two have also shown plenty of love for each other via social media over the years.

In a sweet birthday tribute to Collins on Instagram, Roy shared a few shots of them together and wrote, “To my best friend, happy birthday. Thank you for being my person on this journey called life. I am so proud of you today, tomorrow, and every single moment after that. I love you the most. xoxo.”

That heartfelt post was liked by fellow gymnast and NFL WAG Simone Biles.
