According to TMZ, Spears was arrested in Ventura County, California, on suspicion of DUI. The outlet learned that the entire situation began around 9:30 pm, when Spears was stopped by the California Highway Patrol. She was later booked and remanded to jail until 6 am on March 5. She has since been released. Additional details are not currently available.

The unexpected arrest came just hours after she was granted a permanent restraining order against an accused stalker. Spears had been harassed by the man for more than a decade. It is unclear where Spears was coming from or where she was headed at the time of her arrest.

She’s never been formally arrested before

Britney Spears’ suspected DUI arrest is her first formal arrest, though she has had legal troubles before. In 2007, during an intensifying personal crisis, Spears had several conversations with the authorities, but none resulted in a formal arrest. In late 2007, she was seen hitting a photographer’s car with an umbrella. While police were called, the pop star was not formally arrested. Earlier in the year, she was charged with a hit-and-run incident after she backed into a car in a parking lot and took off. While she was charged with a crime, she wasn’t actually booked.

The following year, as her custody battle waged on and her mental health continued to deteriorate, police were called to Spears’ home. During that incident, the music icon refused to hand over custody of her children to their father, Kevin Federline. Police diffused the situation and provided help for Spears, but she was not charged with a crime.

The following month, Britney Spears was placed under a conservatorship. Her father was tasked with making decisions for her, including medical care, career, and finances.  The nature of the conservatorship and the extent of control given to Jamie Spears over his adult child were repeatedly called into question. The conservatorship ended in 2021.
