Kim Kardashian announced her plans to become a lawyer in 2019. The proclamation was made during an interview with Vogue, and the reality TV star plans to fulfill the promise. It is just taking a while. She seemed to be pretty close to fulfilling the dream in July, but it was not meant to be. Kardashian’s July 2025 attempt at the Bar Exam was unsuccessful. Now, fans are wondering just how many times she’s failed. It feels like more than once, but it’s technically not.

How many times has Kim Kardashian taken the Bar Exam?

On November 8, Kim Kardashian took to her Instagram Stories to share some disappointing news. She informed her followers that she had officially failed the California State Bar Exam. Kardashian took the notoriously difficult test in July 2025, after several years of studying. Fans largely assume she has failed the exam multiple times, but that’s not exactly the case.

Kim Kardashian has only taken the full Bar Exam once. She has, however, taken the “Baby Bar” multiple times. The “Baby Bar,” officially known as the First-Year Law Students’ Examination, is a specialized exam for individuals studying law in non-traditional ways. The exam is designed to ensure that students in non-accredited programs, such as apprenticeships, have a solid foundation in the fundamentals of legal study before proceeding to the full exam. It’s given by the State Bar of California. Students typically take the test after they’ve spent a year in their chosen non-traditional school setting.

Kardashian did not pass the Baby Bar on her first, second, or even third try. It took her four attempts to pass the exam. She celebrated the achievement in 2021, noting that it was one of her “most meaningful” accomplishments. She had to pass the Baby Bar exam in order to be eligible to sit for the California Bar Exam because she’s not a traditional law student. Students who complete a traditional law program are not required to take the FYLSE. So, technically, she has only failed the California Bar Exam once, but she has failed the prerequisite test three times.

When can she take it next?

Kim Kardashian’s failing grade on the California Bar Exam might have been a disappointment, but it shouldn’t be a shock. Sure, her father, Robert Kardashian, passed his exam in the 1970s on the first try, but that’s actually pretty impressive. The California Bar Exam is known as one of the toughest exams in the country, and it has a pass rate to prove it. Only about half of the individuals who take the test at any given time pass it. A pass percentage for the July 2025 exam has been released, and it was a tough one. According to the State Bar of California, over 7,000 students took the exam, and around 54% of them passed. In February 2025, 63% of the 3,000 students who took it passed.

While the reality TV star might be disappointed that she failed, it hasn’t ended her journey to become a lawyer. She can take the test again. Administered twice a year, Kardashian could technically sign up for the February 2026 test if she wanted to, but we have a feeling she is likely to want to get more study time in before attempting the massive undertaking again. July 2026 or February 2027 as potential retake dates feel much more realistic. Kim Kardashian hasn’t officially shared her plans to retake the Bar Exam, though.
