If Convicted Could Diddy End up in the Same Federal Prison as R. Kelly?
Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs is waiting to learn his fate after multiple weeks of testimony revealed some of the music mogul’s most heinous moments. If convicted of sex trafficking and racketeering, the record producer could spend decades behind bars. While the jury hasn’t made a decision just yet, followers are already wondering what federal prison Diddy may be housed in if he is convicted. Could he possibly end up in the same prison as R. Kelly? It’s unlikely.
Do inmates have the option to request a specific prison?
Diddy is waiting to learn whether he’ll spend many years behind bars or walk free after a nine-month-long imprisonment. If he’s convicted, Diddy likely won’t serve out the entirety of his sentence at Metropolitan Detention Center, the Brooklyn federal lockup he’s called home since September 2024. The lockup is a short-term facility that largely accommodates inmates awaiting trial.
If convicted, he’ll move to a long-term facility, but it’s unlikely he’ll have a say in exactly where he heads. While inmates can make requests, the courts do not have to accommodate them. There are currently 122 federal prisons, though the number of institutions that can accommodate him is much smaller. Ultimately, the Bureau of Prisons makes the final call.
Where is R. Kelly housed?
R. Kelly and Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs were never really friends. While they ran in the same circles, they actively kept their distance. In fact, R. Kelly’s lawyer recently reiterated that Diddy and R. Kelly were never pals. Despite that, he knows what Diddy is going through.
R. Kelly is housed at FCI Butner after being convicted of racketeering, sex trafficking, producing child pornography, and enticing a child. He is serving 31 years. The “Ignition” rapper was initially held at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Chicago but was transferred to FCI Butner in April 2023.
Earlier this month, R. Kelly made headlines when he was rushed to a North Carolina hospital following an overdose. His lawyer claims the overdose was a murder plot and requested the R&B artist be released on house arrest. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the request was denied.
Could Diddy end up in the same prison?
It’s always possible that Diddy could end up in the same prison. After all, similar crimes are often housed together, and the similarities between Diddy’s and R. Kelly’s crimes make it a possibility. Still, it’s unlikely that the courts would send Diddy to the same location.
Various other prisons could accommodate his needs, meaning it is not necessary to house him in the same place as R. Kelly. The Bureau of Prisons may be motivated to keep them apart to prevent excessive publicity and drama within a cell block. Several insiders suspect Diddy will be transferred to a minimum security institution if convicted; R. Kelly is housed in a medium security location.
