Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez: Critics Say ‘Tacky’ Choices at Their $50 Million Wedding Prove ‘Money Can’t Buy Class’
Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez recently tied the knot in a $50 million wedding ceremony in Venice. The billionaire couple’s nuptials sparked its fair share of protests in Italy. Many people have also pushed back against it online. Though the wedding cost an exorbitant amount, a number of critics have said that the money doesn’t appear to have been worth it.
Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez’s wedding cost $50 million
At Bezos and Sánchez’s Venetian wedding, roughly 200 celebrity and well-moneyed guests poured into the city’s luxury hotels. The wedding was a three-day affair that began on Thursday, June 26 with a pre-wedding reception in the cloisters of the medieval church Madonna dell’Orto.
The following day, the couple exchanged vows on the private island of San Giorgio before hosting their main wedding reception at the historic building Arsenale. Luca Zaia, the president of the Veneto regional government, estimated that the weekend cost between $47 and $56 million (per NBC News).
Many people have criticized the couple’s choices
While Bezos and Sánchez’s guests seemed happy to be there, many others criticized the wedding’s excesses. A number of people also believe the enormous bill was not worth it. One Reddit user ranked all the things they found “tacky” and “embarrassing” about the wedding, noting “$50 million can’t buy class and taste.”
“I resent being aware of how poorly executed this wedding is,” wrote one person. “I feel like a French peasant who just learned about Louis XV commissioning a 2,000,000 livres necklace for his mistress! Why did you spend so much money? Why is the end result so gaudy?”
The couple’s wedding invitation received widespread derision, and many people have also mocked the decision to use gray carpeting at their outdoor ceremony. A number of people have said it looked like “office carpet.”
“The carpet absolutely sends me,” one person wrote. “I get not wanting for heels to get stuck in the ground or something but if you’re THIS rich, surely there are better ways?! Like damn, spend some of that money to do a wooden walkway or something.”
One person noted that if they were going to spend so much money and resources, they should have at least made it look worthwhile.
“If you’re going to hoard wealth, destroy the planet and doom us all, at least give us something better to look at. Jesus.”
Some celebrities have also spoken critically about Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez’s wedding
Social media users are not the only people speaking out about Bezos and Sánchez’s wedding. While there were many celebrity guests in attendance, others have criticized it.
“The BEZOS wedding,” wrote Rosie O’Donnell on Instagram. “It turned my stomach. Seeing all these billionaires. Gathering in the gross excess of it all. The show of it. Is Oprah friends with Jeff Besos. Really – how is that possible. He treats his employees with disdain. By any metric he is not a nice man.”
She went on to describe Sánchez as his “fake fem bot wife,”
“Sold his soul. Is what it looks like from here,” O’Donnell continued. “The devil is smiling. At all his conquests.”
Charlize Theron also poked fun at the ceremony.
“I think we might be the only people who did not get an invite to the Bezos wedding,” she said at an event for the Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project. “But that’s OK because they suck and we’re cool.”
