Jennifer Hudson has reached an important milestone in parenting. Her only son, David Otunga Jr., is developing into the man he will become. The 16-year-old, whose life has largely been kept private until now, has ventured into the public eye a bit more recently. It’s clear Jennifer Hudson is immensely proud of him. During a recent interview, she gushed that her high school junior appears to be taking after her a bit; she insists he’s a “little musician.”

Jennifer Hudson gushes over her ‘little musician’ son

Jennifer Hudson attended the Daytime Emmy Awards this year, where her show, The Jennifer Hudson Show, was nominated for multiple awards. While the EGOT winner didn’t take home any new statues, she did stop for a chat with E! News, and she dished a fair bit about her private life. Along with chatting about her boyfriend, Common, Jennifer Hudson opened up about her teenage son.

The talk show host revealed that her son, David Otunga Jr., is doing really well. She shared that it’s been fun to see him come into his own, now that he’s a 16-year-old high school junior. Hudson even said her son is taking after her a bit. She told E! News that the teen is a “little musician” and enjoys making beats. She seemed pretty impressed with his progress, but refused to share more about his plans. She suggested fans stay tuned to see what the young musician decides to do long term, though she isn’t against him finding his way into the studio with Common.

Hudson went on to joke that she’s now starting to see the wheels turning in her teen’s mind. She says he thinks the girls think he’s fly. She went on to gas him up a little, insisting he has a reason to think that.  He is, in fact, “fly,” insists his mom.

Who is Jennifer Hudson’s co-parent?

Jennifer Hudson is now in a relationship with Common, but she was once engaged to David Otunga Jr.’s father. Hudson and David Otunga Sr. met in 2007 and announced their engagement the following year. In 2009, they welcomed their only child together. While they remained engaged, they never made it down the aisle, with Hudson insisting she was happy to take it slow. In 2017, they split for good, with Hudson being granted a temporary restraining order against her ex-fiancé.

Over the course of the next two years, they battled over custody and child support, with the former pair finally agreeing to 50/50 custody. Otunga Sr. is currently based in Chicago and works as a motivational speaker, fitness advocate, and actor. He’s also a Harvard-educated attorney, though he is best known for his work as a professional wrestler. Hudson, who maintains homes in both Chicago and California, didn’t mention if David Otunga Jr. has any interest in any of the career paths his father has had.
