Jennifer Lopez has accomplished a great deal since she started her entertainment career in the late ’80s, but there is one goal she has yet to achieve. Lopez said she has always wanted to appear on Broadway, but this hasn’t happened for her yet. She shared why she doesn’t think being on Broadway is likely for her.

Jennifer Lopez doesn’t think she’ll be able to accomplish one goal

Lopez is an actor, dancer, and singer, all necessary skills for appearing in a Broadway musical. While she’s dreamed of being in one, she hasn’t had time for it.

“I’ve always thought about it,” she told Entertainment Weekly. “I’ve always had a fantasy of doing Broadway, but my life has always been the music and the movies, so there’s never been a time.”

She doesn’t think her career, at least as it is now, will ever let her spend that much time focusing on one project alone.

“It would be a nice thing to slow down and just do one thing for a period of time,” she said. “But it’s a bigger commitment. And I don’t know if I could do eight shows a week.”

Still, she said she had a very specific musical in mind should an opportunity ever arise. She nearly starred in a television production of Bye Bye Birdie, but it fell apart.

“I would die to do Bye Bye Birdie,” she said. “It went away. That was going to be more of a movie, but it would be nice to revive that on Broadway, too.”

Jennifer Lopez recently starred in a movie musical

Lopez stars in the new musical film Kiss of the Spider Woman, her first movie musical. The film features musical numbers and dance sequences. Lopez drew on her past as a dancer in her scenes.

“These were the styles that I learned when I was a very little girl,” she said. “I learned jazz, I learned ballet. I learned a Broadway style of dancing. Then, when I was a teenager, I started doing hip-hop and street dances because I grew up in the Bronx. When I started doing my own music, I stayed in that style. So, people saw me more in that style for a long time.”

She said she eagerly looked forward to returning to her roots in dance.

Spider Woman was like coming back to something that I had always done,” she said. “It took time, but I was so excited. I had that vocabulary in my body already. So, it was dusting it off of the shelf and making it shiny and new again.”

Kiss of the Spider Woman is currently playing in theaters.

Lopez once spoke about being an actor and singer

Appearing in a Broadway musical would allow Lopez to combine her skills as an actor and singer. While she is accomplished at both, Lopez admitted she thinks she’s better at acting.

“I think I’m a really great performer,” she told Vanity Fair, adding, “I think I’m a really great actress. I feel confident in those things — that’s a better way to say it.”

Still, she didn’t think she was a bad singer.

“I’m not as gifted a vocalist as some of the girls that are out there, but I know I communicate,” she said. “When I think of great vocalists, I think of Marc [Anthony], of Luther Vandross, of Whitney Houston. But Marc [Anthony] has helped me a lot with this; he always said I had a beautiful voice and that it was better than I thought it was.”
