Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey split up decades ago. Both have moved on and had entire lives since their short-lived marriage ended. That doesn’t mean encounters aren’t still awkward. Simpson and Lachey both took to the friendly skies recently and happened to be on the same flight. Things were more than a bit uncomfortable, reported fellow passengers. Apparently, neither Lachey nor Simpson is ready to be friendly.

Nick Lachey and Jessica Simpson ended up on the same flight recently

Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey just proved that time does not heal all wounds. According to TMZ, Lachey and Simpson were coincidentally seated close by one another on a flight to Hawaii back in late March. The pair spotted each other, and things reportedly got really awkward, really quickly.

Other passengers noted that Lachey turned red as soon as he spotted his ex-wife, and she opted to switch seats with another member of her party to get as far away from him as possible. According to onlookers, the pair didn’t exchange much in the way of plesantries, but the tension was obvious.

Lachey’s wife, Vanessa Lachey, was seated with him. Simpson’s estranged husband, Eric Johnson, was reportedly on the same flight, but he wasn’t seated in the first-class cabin with Simpson or her first ex-husband. The former NFL star was seated in coach, according to reports. That’s probably good news for Johnson. He didn’t have to sit through all of the awkwardness.

How long were they married?

Nick Lachey and Jessica Simpson’s reaction to being on the same flight would have some fans thinking they split up just recently. That certainly isn’t the case, nor was their romance particularly long. Nick Lachey and Jessica Simpson became an item back in the late 1990s, while both were working as musicians. Lachey’s fame from 98 Degrees, coupled with Simpson’s “good girl” solo career, made them a staple couple of the early 2000s.

In 2002, they made things official, tying the knot in Simpson’s native Texas. MTV capitalized on the duo’s popularity with the reality TV series, Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica. The series, considered the first of its kind, ran for just a couple of seasons before it became clear the young couple was struggling.

By 2004, rumors of serious strain surfaced. The following year, Simpson filed for divorce. Their split was finalized in 2006, with Lachey at one point arguing he got a “bad edit” on the reality TV series. In total, the pair were married for just three years, and together for around 7 when they called it quits. Despite that, they both moved on. Still, their in-air moment indicates maybe not everything that happened between them is considered water under the bridge.
