Jim Carrey’s Rep Bluntly Responded to Rumors He Was Replaced by a Clone
Jim Carrey’s recent appearance at the César Awards sparked a flurry of conspiracy theories on social media. Many people pointed out differences in the actor’s appearance, leading some to conclude that a clone replaced the real Carrey. Makeup artist Alexis Stone only further fueled speculation after posting a picture of a mask and claiming they were wearing it to look like Carrey at the ceremony. The actor’s rep had a blunt response to the online conversation.
Jim Carrey accepted an honorary César award, prompting rumors that he was a clone
On Feb. 26, Carrey attended the César Awards to accept an honorary award. Carrey delivered his acceptance speech in French.
“Thank you to my wonderful family, my daughter Jane, and my grandson Jackson. I love you now and forever. Thank you to my sublime companion, Min Ah,” he said. “I love you, Min Ah. And finally, thank you to the funniest man I have ever known: my father, Percy Joseph Carrey, who taught me the value of love, generosity, and laughter.”
The heartfelt speech unintentionally kicked off a wave of unhinged speculation online. Many people wondered if the person giving the speech was actually Carrey and not a clone. Stone’s post only further fueled speculation. He included two photos of Carrey at the event, followed by an image of a mask, wig, and prosthetic teeth.
Jim Carrey’s rep responded to rumors that a clone was at the César Awards
While the speculation is obviously outlandish, it hasn’t slowed down. Carrey’s longtime rep, Marleah Leslie, had a to-the-point response to the conspiracy theory.
“Jim Carrey attended the César Awards, where he accepted his Honorary César Award,” she told TMZ.
Still, the online conversation has not abated. A number of people believe Leslie’s statement is part of a cover-up.
The award ceremony also commented on the conspiracy theory
Gregory Caulier, the general delegate of the César Awards, has also responded to the conspiracy theory about Carrey.
“Jim Carrey’s visit has been planned since this summer,” Caulier told Variety in a statement. “From the outset, he was extremely touched by the Academy’s invitation. Eight months of ongoing, constructive discussions. He worked on his speech in French for months, asking me about the exact pronunciation of certain words.”
Caulier added that Carrey brought many friends and family members with him.
“He came with his partner, his daughter, his grandson, and 12 close friends and family members,” he said. “His longtime publicist accompanied him. His old friend Michel Gondry, who has made a film and two series with him, was there, and they were delighted to see each other again.”
He dismissed the online conversation about Carrey and said that his takeaway from the ceremony was Carrey’s kindness.
“For me, it’s a non-issue,” he said. “I just remember his generosity, his kindness, his benevolence, his elegance.”
