Joe Manganiello released his memoir, Bloodlines, on Oct. 13. While the book is about his mysterious illness and his search for answers, a good portion of the nonfiction work mentions Joe Manganiello’s marriage to Sofia Vergara. While the marriage was over before the book was written, Manganiello dropped more than a couple of bombshells about his time with the Modern Family star. These were the biggest.

Bombshell #1: Joe Manganiello said Sofia Vergara stopped hugging him during their marriage

Joe Manganiello’s illness had such a profound effect on his marriage that he claims Sofia Vergara refused to hug him during the stretch when he was sickest. In the book, Manganiello wrote that the marriage lost all intimacy, so much so that Vergara refused to hug him even when he pleaded with her.

The illness, which still has not been entirely diagnosed, began shortly after he and Vergara tied the knot. Severe stomach pain, ulcers, fevers, and fatigue eventually led to a lifesaving emergency surgery. Despite the lack of physical comfort, Manganiello did admit that Vergara served as an important part of his care team, focusing her efforts on arranging his medical appointments.

Bombshell #2: Joe Manganiello claims Sofia Vergara’s explanation for their split is bogus

After their 2023 split, Vergara said the marriage ended because Joe Manganiello wanted children and she didn’t. Manganiello disputes that claim, suggesting Vergara exaggerated the real story. Instead, he insists he was the one who stepped back from the idea of growing their family.

Manganiello claims that he walked away from the idea of parenting because he feared he’d die from his illness and leave Vergara alone to raise a child. Once he recovered, he says he told her everything was back on the table and wanted to know where she stood. He insists he didn’t push for parenthood one way or the other and disputes that it was the sole reason for the split.

Bombshell #3: The actor said a shaman claimed he was cursed

While many of the claims Joe Manganiello made about his marriage to Sofia Vergara are fairly practical, a couple of passages in the book delve a bit into the supernatural. In one passage, Manganiello claims he was told by a shaman that Sofia Vergara’s past love was creating all of the health problems Joe Manganiello was dealing with.

The shaman claimed someone from Vergara’s past had placed a curse on Manganiello, and that the curse was responsible for his intestinal troubles. Manganiello wrote that he believed the man Vergara was involved with right before him might be to blame. There is no concrete evidence of a curse.

Bombshell #4: An abduction plan was almost hatched

Sofia Vergara’s former loves factored more heavily into Joe Manganiello’s memoir than you might think. One of the biggest bombshells about his marriage actually involved one of Vergara’s exes. In Bloodlines, Manganiello wrote that a friend actually offered to abduct Vergara’s ex-fiancé, Nick Loeb. He insists he shut down the plan, and Loeb was never abducted as far as we know.
