The Chrisley family has endured a great deal of strain and strife over the years. While their reality TV series, Chrlsiey Knows Best, documented most of those ups and downs, including family estrangements and arrests, the effect reality TV life has had on the family’s younger members was unknown until recently. Grayson Chrisley, now 19, just opened up about his life while his parents were incarcerated on fraud charges. The teenager made a poignant admission about everything he had given up for the sake of the family’s show. His mother is now commenting.

Grayson Chrisley revealed he gave up almost everything for reality TV

In one poignant scene from the Lifetime series, The Chrisleys: Back to Reality,  Grayson showed off a stuffed bear that contained a recording of his mother’s voice. He revealed that he wouldn’t play the recording for the camera as it was something he wanted to keep private. He went on to say that “they” had given the cameras “everything” else.

Julie Chrisley commended her son’s openness and vulnerability

Julie Chrisley has finally commented on Grayson’s admission. She commended the 19-year-old for setting boundaries, insisting that it was important for him to do so. In a conversation with Today, she revealed that she didn’t know he had felt that way. She said she was unaware that he had mentioned the bear on the show at all. She was quick to insist the moment of vulnerability was a good thing, though.

While Julie Chrisley commended Grayson’s openness and ability to set boundaries, she did skate over the revelation that the teen had given up his entire life, thus far, for reality TV. There is something deeply troubling about that admission, and neither Todd nor Julie seems interested in acknowledging it. It’s especially dark when you consider just how young Grayson was when the family rose to fame, and how little control he likely had over what parts of his life were brodcast ot the world.

Grayson was just eight when Chrisley Knows Best premiered. The show was canceled in 2023; the teen was 16. He seems open to the idea of continuing with projects now that he’s an adult. Still, one has to wonder if he was really as OK with having his life recorded as it seemed at the time. Several former reality TV kids have stepped forward, over the years, to discuss the impact of their early careers. Several former stars have criticized the lack of control they had. Some have noted that they felt exploited.
