The Princess of Wales (formerly known as Kate Middleton) made a surprise visit with her husband, Prince William, to Northern Ireland. Their Oct. 14 trip was the couple’s first joint visit to the country since they traveled to Belfast in 2022 following the death of Queen Elizabeth II

The pair made a stop at Mallon Farm, a flax farm in County Tyrone that is spearheading the revival of flax growing for linen, as a blueprint for sustainable farming systems.

The princess donned a rustic look, layering muted tones of grey, brown, and green. But it was her accessories that had people talking as she sported earrings representing the ultimate symbol of luck and a nod to Northern Ireland’s heritage.

Now, the fine jewelry experts at the U.K. retailer Steven Stone are taking a closer look at the shamrock-shaped earrings Kate wore and offering insight into their design and symbolism.

Maxwell Stone told Showbiz Cheat Sheet: “Kate Middleton chose a pair of earrings by British designer Daniella Draper for the occasion — a subtle yet meaningful accessory. Crafted from recycled solid 9ct yellow gold, the earrings are shaped like shamrocks, a fitting nod to Irish heritage. According to tradition, each leaf of the shamrock represents faith, hope, and love, while a rare fourth leaf symbolizes luck — making them a thoughtful choice for the royal visit.

“Daniella Draper is among the Princess of Wales’ go-to brands, reflecting her appreciation for accessible, high-street fashion despite her access to the royal collection. The earrings retail for £200, striking a balance between elegance, symbolism, and sustainability.”
