The royal family has some long-standing traditions that have been kept up and followed for many, many years. But when Prince William and the Princess of Wales (formerly known as Kate Middleton) ascend the throne, change is inevitable as they want to “modernize the monarchy.”

A change that is reportedly going to be made by William’s wife right away is one that has been described as not only “awkward” but “cruel,” and that is the royal weigh-in.

The tradition happens annually on Christmas, with each family member being weighed before and after their Christmas lunch. The custom is believed to have been started by Edward VII in the early 1900s to ensure everyone had eaten their fill.

An insider told Radar Online: “From Kate’s perspective, the tradition feels old-fashioned, awkward, and a bit cruel. She wants Christmas to center on warmth, ease, and shared time together, rather than rituals that single people out or invite judgment.”

Another tradition Kate will be ditching when she and William are running the family is opening gifts on Christmas Eve, which goes back to the royals’ German ancestry and was set during Queen Victoria’s reign from 1837 to 1901.

As a source close to the Waleses told the Daily Beast, “Kate has always found the presents on Christmas Eve thing weird. It is definitely going to be got rid of when they are officially running things. Everything is going to be much more relaxed and have a middle-class flavor. You can bet your bottom dollar they will be doing proper presents for each other and the kids there on Christmas Day.”
