Why Kate Winslet’s Risque See-Through Top Wasn’t a Distraction for King Charles When They Met
Kate Winslet has rubbed elbows with royalty on more than one occasion.
Today, the Oscar-winner is one of the ambassadors for King Charles’ charity, The King’s Foundation. But she revealed that her very first meeting with the monarch was a little awkward before she, um, covered things up.
Here’s what the Titanic actress just said about her very first meeting with the king that could have been a disaster.
What happened the first time Winslet met King Charles?
On Nov. 18, Winslet was a guest on Jimmy Kimmel Live! and relayed a story about when she met then-Prince Charles back in 1996 for the first time.
She explained that he attended the premiere of her movie Sense and Sensibility in London. Winslet, who was 20 years old at the time, said that she didn’t think she would actually speak to the then-heir to the throne that night. For that reason, she didn’t put a ton of thought into her red carpet outfit and opted for something cute and sexy. She chose a black lace bodysuit that was made almost entirely out of see-through fabric.
“I sort of hadn’t realized that we were really going to meet him,” she told Kimmel. “And so I forgot about the fact that I was wearing a kind of transparent lace outfit.”
Winslet then recalled how she began to panic a bit when she realized she was about to be face-to-face with the royal, recalling, “As he’s making his way towards me, I’m like, ‘Nipples. Nipples. Nipples. Oh my god!'”
Luckily, she had a jacket that she used to quickly cover up her top.
“Thank god I’d worn a coat,” she said with a laugh.
Why her risqué shirt wouldn’t have been an issue for the king anyway
Even if Winslet hadn’t been able to cover up in time, her sexy attire wouldn’t have been a distraction for the king anyway, thanks to something his late father, Prince Philip, taught him a long time ago.
Comedian Stephen Fry revealed that King Charles told him about the best advice Prince Philip ever gave him during an episode of The Graham Norton Show.
“He did tell me — I think it’s OK to repeat this,” Fry said per Express. “The then-Prince of Wales did tell me once that the best piece of advice his father had ever given him was: When you’re doing a lineup and there are women, always look only into their eyes. Don’t for a second let your eyes drop to their chest because that is when the photograph goes off.”
Fry then talked about how Charles always used that piece of advice, and it helped out immensely when he met the Spice Girls in a lineup and Geri Halliwell (aka Ginger Spice) had on a revealing outfit. Fry pointed this out in a picture shown of the event where other men, except for King Charles, were “very distracted.”
“And if you look, he’s not looking down,” Fry noted. “All the rest of us [boys] are looking down.”
