Britney Spears’ ex-husband, Kevin Federline, will release a tell-all memoir about his years as a partner and co-parent with the pop star. The book, titled You Thought You Knew, makes serious allegations about Spears’ behavior during and after their marriage. Though Spears and her representatives have pushed back against the claims, Federline said his sons support the book’s publication. He said he wrote it with them in mind.

Kevin Federline said he wrote a new book for the sake of the sons he shares with Britney Spears

In You Thought You Knew, Federline makes explosive claims about Spears. He alleges that she drank throughout her pregnancy, used cocaine while breastfeeding, and attempted to break into his home. Federline said he’d considered writing a book for years, but only recently got serious about it.

“I picked it up and put it down quite a lot over probably a five-year period,” he told the Associated Press. “I think that it’s a very good description of me, who I am, the father I’ve become, the husband I am, the ex-husband I am.”

Federline said the two sons he shares with Spears, Sean Preston and Jayden James, inspired him to write the book. He said he wanted to share his experiences with Spears so that they don’t have to.

“I want my children to be able to move forward in their lives and know that the actual truth of everything is out there,” he said. “That’s a very, very big part of this for me. And it’s really important that I share my story, so they don’t have to.”

Federline received full custody of the couple’s sons after their divorce in 2007.

Britney Spears spoke out against the new book

As salacious details from the book continue to circulate ahead of its release, Spears has spoken out in her defense.

“The constant gaslighting from ex-husband is extremely hurtful and exhausting,” she wrote on Instagram. “I have always pleaded and screamed to have a life with my boys. Relationships with teenage boys is complex. I have felt demoralized by this situation and have always asked and almost begged for them to be a part of my life. Sadly, they have always witnessed the lack of respect shown by [their] own father for me.”

She added that those “white lies in that book, they are going straight to the bank and I’m the only one who genuinely gets hurt here.”

Kevin Federline said their sons approve of the book

Spears and Federline’s sons are 20 and 19. Federline said that they are old enough to understand why he is writing the book, and says they gave him their stamp of approval.
