King Charles Decides What Kate Wears as She Breaks Out Something That Hasn’t Been Seen in Decades
The Princess of Wales (formerly known as Kate Middleton) has done it again. Just three months after she stunned with a gorgeous tiara and shimmering gown at the state banquet for U.S. President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump, the princess was a vision at the German State Banquet.
The royals hosted German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and First Lady Elke Büdenbender and held the lavish dinner on Dec. 3. Prince William’s wife rocked an eye-catching tiara, which is the largest diadem we’ve ever seen her wear.
The Oriental Circlet Tiara hasn’t been seen in public in two decades, since the late Queen Elizabeth II wore it in 2005. But was the decision to wear it Kate’s choice?
According to someone who used to work for the family, it’s actually King Charles who decides which royal wears what and when. Here’s more on that.
It’s up to King Charles what Kate gets to wear and when
Grant Harrold was King Charles’s butler for seven years. During his time working for the now-monarch, Harrold’s duties included those of valet, housekeeper, house manager, and driver. He also looked after Prince Harry, Prince William, and Kate whenever they stayed at Highgrove House.
Speaking on behalf of Slots Temple, Harrold told Showbiz Cheat Sheet, “The tiara is from the Royal Collection, which is currently officially controlled by King Charles as the monarch. He gets to decide who wears which pieces. I think he will have tasked Queen Camilla with overseeing the collection and speaking to the royal women about who wants to wear which piece. So whenever there is a big event, Camilla will speak to Kate, Princess Anne, Sophie Edinburgh, and anyone else in attendance about who will wear which piece.
“[King Charles] is well aware that as the future queen, Princess Kate will one down be in control of this collection herself, so he will be more than happy for her to explore it now. It’s only right that she gets to wear them now. Kate knows what her future is. She knows her future role as queen will involve her wearing these beautiful and historic items.”
Why the former royal aide thinks this stunning tiara choice was Kate’s
Harrold added that he does believe Kate chose this headpiece herself, opining, “It’s a really interesting choice of tiara from Kate. It’s a striking piece. It’s very bold and very overstated. Kate is sending a clear message with the choice — It’s Kate saying ‘this is my look, I’m doing it my own way’. It’s extraordinary that a piece that’s over 170 years old, but on her and with that dress, it looks very modern. It’s bringing the old into the new.”
Harrold continued, “This tiara was created for Queen Victoria. It was a favorite of the Queen Mother, but the late Queen Elizabeth only wore it once. Kate won’t want to copy the late Queen Elizabeth II. She respected and admired her husband’s grandmother, but she will want to do things in her way and follow her own style — which the late queen would have approved of entirely.
“Kate knows her and Prince William’s monarchy is going to be very different to that of the late queen. It will have to be a very modern monarchy, so why shouldn’t her fashion represent that?”
