HBO Max unceremoniously ended And Just Like That… after three seasons. In many ways, the Sex and the City reboot was doomed from the start. Still, the cast is having a hard time admitting that. Months after the cancellation, Kristin Davis, the actor who took on the role of Charlotte York, refuses to admit the show was canceled and continues to insist they’ll be back at some point. She contends that the series ended because Sarah Jessica Parker and Michael Patrick King didn’t know what to do after the end of Carrie and Aidan. We are flummoxed.

Kristin Davis blames Aidan Shaw for the end of And Just Like That…’

It has been months since And Just Like That… ended its three-season run with a flooded bathroom. Kristin Davis still hasn’t entirely come to terms with that, it seems. During a recent episode of her podcast, Are You a Charlotte, Davis discussed the show’s end a bit. She argued that the series ended because Sarah Jessica Parker and Michael Patrick King didn’t know how to navigate past the end of Aidan Shaw and Carrie Bradshaw’s relationship.

Davis, while chatting with former co-star Mario Cantone during the episode, said, “Once Aidan was really done, I feel like creatively there was an emptiness that Michael [Patrick King] and Sarah Jessica didn’t have an immediate answer for.” They went on to discuss how the finale didn’t feel like a finale, and that they both hope more is to come. Cantone, who played Anthony Marantino on the series, is insistent that he was hoping for one more season to wrap everything up. It didn’t come, but Davis doesn’t think it’s over.

She revealed during the episode that she strongly suspects another project will be in the works sooner or later. Still, she was careful to make it clear that talks are not underway. She is basing the statement on nothing more than a gut feeling. Mario Cantone seemed more skeptical. Still, he appeared interested in a return.

The end of Aidan and Carrie could have been good

While Davis contends that the end of Carrie and Aidan’s third attempt at love was the final nail for the reboot, we can’t agree. In fact, the end of Carrie and Aidan should have been a great way to get the series back to its source material. The only reason it wasn’t was likely because HBO pulled the plug. For many fans, the relationship was actually pulling the show further down. The romance ensured that the writers didn’t get to capitalize on the chance to depict dating in New York as an older woman recently widowed.

While we hope that Davis is right, and the cast will reconnect to continue Carrie, Miranda, and Charlotte’s stories, we hope not to see Aidan back again. While the character was important to Carrie’s overall story, he no longer fit in her life. His reemergence made it impossible for the writing team to tell a truly original and dynamic story. We hope for better in the next project, if there is one.
