Perhaps the most-anticipated award at the Oscars this year was the Best Actor category and whether that was going to go to Timothée Chalamet or Michael B. Jordan. The two men were the clear favorites and had been going up against each other all awards season. Chalamet won the Golden Globe for his role in Marty Supreme, before Jordan got the win at the SAG Awards for his role in Sinners. So it was anyone’s guess who would take home the Academy Award.

In the end, Jordan’s name was called and all eyes were on Chamalet immediately after to get his reaction and his girlfriend, Kylie Jenner’s reaction.

Some suggested that Chamalet was “cocky” throughout the ceremony and may have believed the Oscars was his to win. Social media also lit up with several users opining that Jenner looked upset that her beau’s name wasn’t called.

Here’s what an expert saw following Jordan’s win, plus why the Sinners star didn’t try to be “funny or clever” during his speech.

Darren Stanton is a body language and behavioral expert with a degree in psychology. He previously worked as a police officer and used his expertise to uncover the truth when interviewing hundreds of suspects. He later moved into media and TV as a consultant and has been dubbed the “Human Lie Detector.

Speaking on behalf of Covers, Stanton told Showbiz Cheat Sheet, “Timothée Chalamet was genuinely happy for Michael. Sometimes we see microexpressions of sadness or disappointment from another nominee, but he seemed genuinely pleased at the moment it was announced. There was a brief close-up of Timothée and Kylie Jenner as Michael walked on stage, and there was definitely genuine happiness from the Marty Supreme star. He knows it’s all part of the game — win or lose. He didn’t flash any animosity, anger, or jealousy.”

But Jenner did show an emotion that wasn’t happiness. According to the expert, there was “disappointment” on her face.

“When it came to Kylie, she wasn’t flashing any negative emotions, like anger or contempt,” Stanton said before adding, “From her facial expressions, she just seemed disappointed for Timothée … Overall, from a non-verbal point of view, there was no contempt … It was just clear she was there to support Timothée and wanted to see him do well.”

As for the night’s big winner, Stanton said, “Michael B. Jordan was genuinely gobsmacked. It took him a few moments to fully register what had happened — he appeared completely stunned and shell-shocked. He clearly needed a moment to grasp that he had won.

“In terms of his delivery during the speech, he came across as a genuine and very humble guy. He didn’t try to be funny or clever — he spoke authentically from the heart. There was no smugness. He was completely genuine. He still seemed really shocked throughout the whole speech. Everything he displayed was consistent and true — he was completely amazed and in awe over winning.”
