Lauren Graham just hit the red carpet for the Emmy Awards; she even linked up with Alexis Bledel, who played her on-screen daughter in Gilmore Girls. The reunion was one that fans had been waiting for. It was nice to see the pair together. While an on-screen reunion is planned for the event, they don’t have an actual Gilmore Girls project in the works. If they do appear in a Gilmore Girls project together, that new project won’t be the already announced documentary. Lauren Graham actually openly discussed the upcoming Gilmore Girls documentary, and it appears to be a big no-go from her. She explained why she had declined the chance to appear.

Lauren Graham explains why she’s not doing the ‘Gilmore Girls’ documentary

Several weeks ago, The Hollywood Reporter announced that a Gilmore Girls documentary was in the works. The feature-length documentary, Searching for Stars Hollow, is being produced by Ink On Paper Studio. The film hopes to explore the cultural impact of the beloved series. While there is no official release date and no network attached to the project just yet, there are plenty of big names on board. Lauren Graham just isn’t one of them.

Lauren Graham is always happy about the prospect of more Gilmore Girls. Over the years, she’s openly praised the series. She insists it was her favorite job and her best role. Graham has stated that she has a “Gilmore Girls” clause written into all of her contracts. Her undying enthusiasm for the series is the reason fans assumed they’d see her appear in Searching for Stars Hollow. When the documentarians released a list of actors who agreed to appear, Graham’s name, along with several other important names, was missing. Fans noticed quickly.

Now, Lauren Graham is explaining exactly why she isn’t appearing. Entertainment Tonight caught up with Lauren Graham at the Emmys and asked her about the documentary. She said that while she loved her time as Lorelai Gilmore, she refuses to be in a Gilmore Girls project that doesn’t have the show’s creator, Amy Sherman-Palladino, attached.

Both Graham and Sherman-Palladino have praised each other publicly, so it is no surprise that her loyalty lies with the show’s creator. It is unclear why Sherman-Palladino isn’t interested in being involved in the documentary. No one has mentioned her or her writer husband, Dan Palladino, in any press about the upcoming project. They have not spoken about it.

Several stars have agreed to appear, though

While Lauren Graham has made her decision on the matter, several actors who played residents of Stars Hollow are willing and able to sit down for interviews. Kelly Bishop is probably the biggest name in the bunch, at least for Gilmore Girls fans. Bishop played Emily Gilmore, Lorelai’s mother. The character remains a fan-favorite nearly a decade after Emily’s final scene. Bishop has been especially open and forthcoming about landing the role and what it meant to her in interviews over the years. We assume she’ll come armed with great stories.

Sally Struthers, Liz Torres, and Rose Abdoo are all planning to offer their thoughts as well. Struthers, Torres, and Abdoo were part of the “local color” that made Stars Hollow feel like a quaint town everyone wants to visit. They played a vital role in its charm. All three women reprised their roles in Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life and have made it clear they are willing to appear in future projects. Crew members, including writers and casting directors, have agreed to share their perspectives, too.
