In 2024, Jay-Z and Sean “Diddy” Combs faced a lawsuit filed by an anonymous accuser. The suit accused the two men of raping a 13-year-old girl. Jay-Z recently said the filing left him furious, and he has adamantly denied the claims made in it. The anonymous woman voluntarily dismissed the lawsuit shortly after filing. Could he still eventually face charges?

Jay-Z faced a rape lawsuit in 2024

In December 2024, an anonymous woman alleged that Combs and Jay-Z raped her when she was 13 years old. Jay-Z promptly denied the allegations made in the civil lawsuit.

“My only heartbreak is for my family,” he told E! News. “My wife and I will have to sit our children down, one of whom is at the age where her friends will surely see the press and ask questions about the nature of these claims, and explain the cruelty and greed of people.”

He also described the allegations as so terrible that he encouraged the accuser to file a criminal suit instead of a civil one. The accuser voluntarily dropped the suit several months after filing.

Could he still face charges following the dismissal of the suit?

After Jay-Z challenged his accuser to file a lawsuit, her lawyer claimed that she was taking this into consideration. At this point, Jay-Z could have faced prosecution.

“Prosecutors would likely assess whether charges can be brought based on the statute of limitations and the strength of available evidence,” criminal defense lawyer Elmira Yousufi of David P. Shapiro Criminal Defense Attorneys told Yahoo. “In New York, first-degree rape has no statute of limitations, so if the alleged assault qualifies under this charge, prosecution could move forward regardless of the time elapsed. However, if the case doesn’t fall under this charge, the statute of limitations may bar prosecution.”

Yousufi noted that prosecutors often hesitate to pursue old rape cases. Once the woman dismissed the suit with prejudice, however, the chances of prosecution became virtually nonexistent. When a case is dismissed with prejudice, it cannot be refiled. Jay-Z took this as a victory.

“The frivolous, fictitious and appalling allegations have been dismissed. This civil suit was without merit and never going anywhere,” he wrote in a statement. “The fictional tale they created was laughable, if not for the seriousness of the claims. I would not wish this experience on anyone.”

Jay-Z said the lawsuit filled him with rage

Jay-Z recently opened up about the charges filed against him. He said that it made 2025 “really hard” on him.

“That whole [lawsuit thing], that s*** took a lot out of me. I was angry. I haven’t been that angry in a long time, uncontrollable anger,” he told GQ. “You don’t put that on someone — that’s a thing that you better be super sure. It used to be like that. You had to be super sure before you put those kind of things on a person. Especially a person like me.”

He said the allegations went against his moral code.

“Even when we were doing the worst things, we had those kind of rules,” he said. “There was a line: no women, no kids. You hear those sayings, but those are the things that I took from the street. We lived and died by that. So it’s strict for me, like it meant a lot to me. I took that really hard. I knew that we were going to walk through that because, first of all, it’s not true. And the truth, at the end of the day, still reigns supreme.”
