Bad Bunny has been announced as the Super Bowl LV Halftime performer on Feb. 8 at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California. The decision to have the Puerto Rican star headline the halftime show for the NFL‘s biggest game has been met with mixed reviews. However, it’s a choice that is being praised by not only his fans, but also many in the entertainment industry.

Here’s what one legendary Latina singer has to say about it, and why she actually turned Jay-Z down when he approached her to do the halftime show with Jennifer Lopez and Shakira back in 2020.

Reason this singer declined to perform with Shakira and JLo at the Super Bowl

The icon who is happy to see Bad Bunny at Super Bowl LV is Gloria Estefan. She shared her excitement while onThe Sherri Shepherd Show.

“I’m so happy for him … I think it’s great. I think we need Latino representation in this particular moment. The Latinos have burned up that show,” Estefan said, before adding, “I have done two of them.”

She then explained that she would have done three if Jay-Z, who produces the big show, had his way.

“It would have been my third time,” Estefan told Shepard about why she declined. “First of all, they’re already dividing that time and it’s really quick. You’re in and out. And secondly, I was going to have to diet during Christmas. I did not. You know what? It’s their moment … I don’t want to push my luck. The two times went great.”

In 1992, Estefan belted out her hits “Live for Loving You” and “Get on Your Feet” alongside athletes from the 1992 Winter Olympics. Then in 1999, Estefan returned and shared the stage with Stevie Wonder, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, and Savion Glover.

Stars react to the choice of Bad Bunny as this year’s halftime performer

A fun fact is that this will not be Bad Bunny’s first time onstage at the Super Bowl. Many fans aren’t aware that Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio was actually a guest during Shakira and JLo’s Super Bowl LIV Halftime Show.

Bad Bunny made an appearance with Shakira as she performed a mashup of her song “Chantaje” with his track “Callaíta” and Cardi B’s “I Like It.” The rapper wasn’t as well-known then as he is today but in 2019, he was featured on “I Like It,” which reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was nominated for the Grammys for Record of the Year.

Lopez and Shakira were two of the stars who reacted to the news that Bad Bunny will be headlining this year’s show.

The “My Love Don’t Cost a Thing” artist shared a picture on X.com of them together at Super Bowl LIV and wrote: “Now it’s your turn !!!!! bori gang lets gooooo.”

Shakira posted the video of Bad Bunny’s announcement and captioned it, “Welcome back to the Super Bowl stage! Aquí va mi gente latina!!” The second sentence translates to “Here go my Latin people.”

Jelly Roll commented on Apple’s Music Instagram post of the announcement, writing, “From Wrestlemania to the Super Bowl– you inspire us all! Much love” with a bunny emoji.

Diplo chimed in, “Can I get guestlist,” while Saweetie exclaimed, “yeeeeee!” And past Super Bowl performer Bruno Mars showed his support on X, adding: “Go get em Bad Bunny!”
