When we think of a revenge dress, we think of a bold, stunning outfit one wears after a breakup or public betrayal to project confidence, power, independence, and of course, show their former partner what they’re missing. One such dress was made famous by Princess Diana. But singer-songwriter Lily Allen gave the revenge dress another meaning when she performed diss tracks written for her ex David Harbour during her West End Girl tour.

Allen turned heartbreak into performance art during the opening night of her West End Girl tour in Glasgow, Scotland, on March 2. When Allen appeared on stage to sing “4Chan Stan,” she wore a long garment featuring what looked like shopping receipts and handwritten lyrics, many of them referencing her ex-husband, Stranger Things actor David Harbour, and gifts he allegedly bought for other women.

Allen and Harbour were married in 2020 and separated in 2025. After their split, Allen poured her emotions into a deeply personal album written while she was still processing the breakup. The record explores themes of betrayal, grief, and the complicated end of their relationship.

In the “4Chan Stan” lyrics, Allen describes discovering evidence that suggested Harbour had bought expensive gifts for another woman while they were still married. She brought the story to life visually, with the costume showing receipts from places like the luxury department store Bergdorf Goodman. Fans quickly dubbed Allen’s gown the “receipt revenge dress.”

At the end of the song, Allen unraveled the material and tossed it aside. The gesture was widely interpreted as a symbolic moment. Now, here’s what an expert says Allen’s performance in that receipt dress proves.

He previously worked as a police officer and used his expertise to uncover the truth when interviewing hundreds of suspects. He later moved into media and TV as a consultant and has been dubbed the “Human Lie Detector.”

Speaking on behalf of Covers, Stanton told Showbiz Cheat Sheet, “In this case, she was very much herself, very authentic. I also noticed a few chin thrusts. The chin thrust is a classic sign of defiance, almost like saying, ‘I’m not going to behave the way you expect me to. I’m not going to adjust how I am to suit you.’ Overall, there was a real defiant confidence.

“In fact, she seemed to be sending quite a positive message — essentially saying you’ve got to be strong, you’ve got to be yourself, you’ve got to be authentic. It reinforced the idea that she’s someone who does things her own way and isn’t going to be walked over.”

Stanton concluded, “There were no pacifying or self-soothing gestures that would suggest a lack of confidence or someone feeling sorry for themselves. It was all very open and positive — lots of open-palm gestures and open body language. And as I mentioned, the chin thrust as well, which more or less says, ‘Up yours, really.’ It’s a clear gesture of defiance.”
