Liza Minnelli Said She Made Worse Marriage Mistakes Than Judy Garland
Judy Garland and Liza Minnelli had a close relationship. Minnelli said she was similar to her mother in many ways, including in her romantic life. Minnelli was married four times, and Garland was married five. She acknowledged that her mother made mistakes in her love life. She thinks that she made worse errors.

In 2002, Minnelli married her fourth husband, David Gest. She said she has major regrets about tying the knot with the film producer.
“I clearly wasn’t sober when I married this clown,” she wrote in her book Kids, Wait Till You Hear This! (per The Times). “What kind of fool was I? The biggest one who ever lived. When I look in the rear-view mirror, I realise I should never have fallen for this crap. But I ignored the red flags flapping in my face.”
Minnelli felt that she was following in her mother’s footsteps in making bad romantic decisions. Garland had five husbands, and a number of her marriages ended poorly. Minnelli still felt that her marriage to Gest was worse.
“Here’s the ugly reality: in marrying this guy I got a low-rent version of my mother’s worst mistakes with men. Mama made bad choices, but mine was the worst,” she wrote. “The damage has been long lasting. Being with Gest shattered my ability to trust new people in my life.”
Minnelli and Gest divorced in 2007.
